Checking An Unconscious Adult/Child/Infant:

  • 1. Check the scene (make sure it’s safe). Call 911. Care for victim, ask someone else for permission to care for patient, or tap patient and say “are you okay?” Tap infant on the foot; Child and adult are checked on the arm.
  • 2. Roll over patient if necessary. Open airway (head tilt, chin lift).
  • 3. Check for signs of life for 10 seconds.
  • 4. If not breating: 2 rescue breaths.
  • 5. Check pulse for 10 seconds (not in adults).
  • 6. Go to either CPR, rescue breathing, or moniter signs of life if person becomes conscious.

Child Rescue Breathing:

  • 1. Follow steps for checking an unconscious child.
  • 2. If there is a pulse, but NO breating pinch nose, and give one breath of air every 3 seconds, for about 2 minutes.
  • 3. Recheck signs of life. Either go to CPR, continue rescue breathing, or moniter patient if conscious.

Infant Rescue Breathing:

  • 1. Follow steps for checking an unconscious infant.
  • 2. If there is a pulse, but no breathing, give a puff of air over mouth AND nose every 3 seconds, for 2 minutes.
  • 3. Recheck patient. Either continue rescue breathing, go to CPR, or moniter signs of life if conscious.

Adult CPR:

  • 1. Follow steps for checking an unconscious adult, however DO NOT check pulse, just go straight to CPR.
  • 2. Place heel of one hand on chest, and place the other hand over that. Make a 90 degree angle with your arms.
  • 3. Give 30 chest compressions at a rate of 100 compressions per minute. Be sure to press down about 2 inches.
  • 4. Give 2 rescue breaths.
  • 5. Continue compressions and breaths until:
    • The scene becomes unsafe.
    • See signs of life.
    • An AED becomes available.
    • You are too exhausted to continue.
    • EMS arrives.

Child CPR:

  • 1. Follow steps for checking an unconscious child. If there is no breathing and no pulse, begin CPR.
  • 2. Place the heel of one hand on child chest, and the other hand on the childs forehead. Position shoulders directly over hands.
  • 3. Give 30 compressions at a rate of 100 compressions per minute. Press down about 1.5in.
  • 4. Give 2 rescue breaths, and continue compression/breath cycle until:
    • Scene becomes unsafe.
    • Find signs of life.
    • AED becomes available.
    • You are too exhausted.
    • EMS arrives.

Infant CPR:

  • 1. Follow steps for checking an unconscious infant. Be sure that you check pulse in the arm.
  • 2. No pulse and no breathing, proceed to CPR.
  • 3. Place 3 fingers on the victims sternum, just below nipple line, and place other hand on the forehead.
  • 4. Give 30 chest compressions at the rate of 100 per min, pressing about 1/2in deep.
  • 5. Give 2 rescue breaths. Continue cycle until:
    • Scene becomes unsafe.
    • Find signs of life.
    • AED becomes available.
    • You’re too exhausted.
    • EMS takes over.

Adult AED:

  • 1. Follow steps for checking an unconscious adult. If there are no signs of life, prepare for AED use.
    • Dry victims chest, do not use alcohol to dry.
    • Shave victims chest with provided razor.
    • Remove medicine patches and metal objects from victim, turn off oxygen tanks.
    • Move away from water, or pile dry clothing under victim.
    • Do not use cell phones near AED.
  • 2. Follow directions from AED machine (Place pads in upper right and lower left, stand clear if shock is advised, continue with CPR).
    • If no shock is advised, the patient may be flat lining, in which CPR should be continued.

Child AED:

  • 1. Follow steps for checking an unconscious child. If child is not breathing and has no pulse, begin AED. Preparation for AED use is the same as adult.
  • 2. Follow AED directions. Place AED pads on the back between the shoulder blades, and on the center of the chest. NYS allows for adult pads to be used on a child.
  • 3. Stand clear of victim when machine is analyzing, if shock is advised press button, continue CPR until there are signs of life, or AED begins reassessing victim. *If no shock is advised, the patient may be flat lining, in which CPR should be continued.

Adult/Child/Infant Unconscious Chooking:

  • 1. Follow steps for checking an unconscious infant. If 2 breaths do not go in, re-tilt head and give another 2 breaths.
  • 2. If air still does not go in, do 30 chest compressions.
  • 3. Check for foreign object by holding down the tongue.
  • 4. If there is nothing visible in throat, continue with 2 breaths.
  • 5. If there is a visible object, do a finger sweep with the smallest finger.
  • 6. Roll victim to side if coughing.
  • 7. Moniter signs of life.

Adult/Child Conscious Choking:

  • 1. 5 back blows. Kneel to the level of a child.
  • 2. 5 abdominal thrusts. Just above navel, below ribcage.
  • 3. Continue until object leaves body or until victim becomes unconscious.

Infant Conscious Choking:

  • 1. Support head, and keep it low. Place child on your thigh.
  • 2. 5 back blows.
  • 3. 5 chest compressions.
  • 4. Repeat until object leave body or until victim becomes unconscious.
