SUDDEN ILLNESS: Illnesses that come on quickly, but may have developed over time.

  • Signs of Sudden Illness:
    • Change in level of consciousness
    • Lightheadedness, weakness, or dizziness
    • Vomiting
    • Change in breathing, circulation, skin temperature and color.
  • General Care For Sudden Illness:
    • Monitor breathing
    • Keep victim comfortable and reassure them
    • Call 911
  • Common Sudden Illnesses:
    • Fainting
    • Diabetic emergencies
    • Seizures
    • Stroke
    • Heart attack
    • Shock

FAINTING: Loss of consciousness due to lack of blood flow to the brain

  • Signs and Symptoms of Fainting:
    • Cool, pale, moist skin
    • Nausea
    • Numbness in extremedies
    • Sweating
    • Blurred vision
    • Headache
  • General Care for Fainting:
    • Call 911
    • Lay victim on their back, and raise feet approx. 12in
    • Loosen restrictive clothing
    • Check for other life threatening conditions
    • Do not give the victim anything to eat or drink
    • Do not splash the victim or slap their face

SEIZURES: Sudden uncontrolled muscular contractions

  • Signs and Symptoms of Seizures:
    • Sudden rise in body temp
    • Change in consciousness
    • Rhythmic jerking of head and limbs
    • Urinating
    • Confusion
    • Drowsiness
    • Becoming rigid
    • Crying out
    • Holding the breath
    • Upward rolling of the eyes
  • General Care for Seizures:
    • Call 911
    • Do not hold down or restrain the victim
    • Maintain open airway
    • Remove nearby objects that could cause injury
    • After seizure, roll to side so fluids will drain out of mouth
    • Check for life threatening conditions
