SUDDEN ILLNESS: Illnesses that come on quickly, but may have developed over time.
- Signs of Sudden Illness:
- Change in level of consciousness
- Lightheadedness, weakness, or dizziness
- Vomiting
- Change in breathing, circulation, skin temperature and color.
- General Care For Sudden Illness:
- Monitor breathing
- Keep victim comfortable and reassure them
- Call 911
- Common Sudden Illnesses:
- Fainting
- Diabetic emergencies
- Seizures
- Stroke
- Heart attack
- Shock
FAINTING: Loss of consciousness due to lack of blood flow to the brain
- Signs and Symptoms of Fainting:
- Cool, pale, moist skin
- Nausea
- Numbness in extremedies
- Sweating
- Blurred vision
- Headache
- General Care for Fainting:
- Call 911
- Lay victim on their back, and raise feet approx. 12in
- Loosen restrictive clothing
- Check for other life threatening conditions
- Do not give the victim anything to eat or drink
- Do not splash the victim or slap their face
SEIZURES: Sudden uncontrolled muscular contractions
- Signs and Symptoms of Seizures:
- Sudden rise in body temp
- Change in consciousness
- Rhythmic jerking of head and limbs
- Urinating
- Confusion
- Drowsiness
- Becoming rigid
- Crying out
- Holding the breath
- Upward rolling of the eyes
- General Care for Seizures:
- Call 911
- Do not hold down or restrain the victim
- Maintain open airway
- Remove nearby objects that could cause injury
- After seizure, roll to side so fluids will drain out of mouth
- Check for life threatening conditions
