THE WORLD: CORADINE

Starting City: Rosehaven of the Red Sands - party has traveled over the mountains for a week to get to Gravesend

Gravesend

  • A fair sized fishing hamlet- think any given New England whaling port, but maybe just a bit past it's prime
  • Long ago there was trade between the people of the sea and those more common races of the land, but the last tritons disappeared long ago and now the town is mostly inhabited by humans
  • A strange fell wind blows through the streets echoed in the shuttering windows and fleeting downturned gaze of the locals
  • A bizarre slime seems to creep out of every sewer grate and between every cobble- it is persistent and does not burn- the local academics have not yet found the source
  • A quaint surface hides the large stock and trade of smuggled goods run through the town which have led to large tracts of tunnels running beneath the streets, intertwining with the sewers and cisterns, and creating a series of hidden ways perfect for hiding any number of secrets

The Bay and Wharf

  • Panker's Bay
  • Tall ships lie becalmed just off the shore of the bay and islet- a sparse forest of masts and riggings
  • The town itself sits in a kind of large ampatheater like natural dip in the hillside
  • A lone spit of land curves off to the right (looking out to sea) at the edge of which a beacon tower burns an everlasting green flame
  • Off to the left of town the land turns into a series of bluffs above which rise a set of mansions - the professor's home is the furthest one out, perched somewhat precariously near the cliff's edge
  • A small rat's nest of docks spider along the waters edge forming the wharf proper, surrounded by taverns and shanty homes

-The Sea Rat's Revenge

  • The local tavern and inn that the party comes upon
  • Its inhabitants are a grim and crusty lot
  • fishing epehmera, boat parts, and trophies adorn the walls
  • It has seen better days and cheerier bounties
  • A trio of older fishermen are constantly in the corner playing cards and telling fish tales

The professor's mansion

  • The mansion is called Balen's Rest
  • A mash of gothic design and parapet towers- the inside is a maze of libraries and workshops with half tinkered equipment strewn about somewhat haphazardly
  • The hallways are full of dusty tomes, large sarcophagi, suits of armor and various trophies- what wallpaper there is to see beneath large portraits of various subject matter is heavily worn by time, salt, and sun
  • The professor is a tall kindly fellow who dresses in long tailcoats and takes his tea on a salt-washed veranda decked in faded colors
  • Though forthcoming he is mostly unhelpful as to the nature of the artifact he posesses ascribing it to a deity of some long lost civilization buried beneath the waves
  • It resembles similar totems found atop high cliff walls, but how could that be? was all ocean once?

The Smuggler's caves

  • There are two ways into the sewer and a secret passage in the back room of the Sea Rat's Revenge
  • Proper tunnels intersect with the sewers- only some of which are on maps owned by the local constabulary
  • The cave with the artifacts can be found but will be full of long dead bones of a single Kua Toa shaman
