- Giovanni Battista Piranesi was a mid-18th-century architect known for his etchings of Roman architecture as well as invented depictions of large catacomb-like prisons. His prints are large and achieve a great level of detail, but i find him truly notable for his ability to achieve tonal value by varying line width rather than increasing the number of lines. his mastery of the technique allows him to create distinct and highly contrasting shadows.
