In this workshop, I learnt how to Coptic bind. This is beneficial for me, because I will bind my MACHINE STOPS’ book and research document using this method. The method is very complicated, but once you get the hand of this with a lot of practice, then you’ll find it easy. I chose this type of binding, because my book is divided into three sections, PART 1: THE AIR-SHIP, PART 2: THE MENDING APPARATUS and PART 3: THE HOMELESS. I also like the aesthetic of this binding, because of its intersect pretzel knots. I struggled in trying to punch holes right at the centre of the spine of the book, so in the future I should insert the hole with more patience.

EVALUATION I made so many mistakes, I did a lot of testers beforehand but I did not use the exact materials in order to test the methods that I want to use for my ‘MACHINE STOPS’. Visually, the final piece looks finished but I don’t think it surpasses up to a professional standard. I would improve the entire book all over again, I could have focused on how scanning words on a scanner, can be manipulated and distorted- creating this scanning effect.

JANE AND WILSON PHOTOGRAPHY Their work focuses on abandoned places, which were onced occupied The locations suffered in damages due nuclear blast. These photographs, have this lonely, abandoned feeling yet I feel that the locations are frightening. The shots of each location; is done so superbly and the organic visuals of each photograph, crying for help and to be saved. The locations are very isolated, and what seems to be lifeless, isn’t exactly lifeless because there’s natural life growing in these locations such as plants. I would actually love to find a completely abandoned location but there isn’t so much around in London. The thrill of seeking these spaces, for photography purposes, investigating the traces of memories and objects left behind. The locations offer melancholic atmosphere, however, imagine yourself being trapped in these locations, you would feel threatened.

These frames of short films, offer this nostalgic and psychedelic visual. It almost reminds me of ‘The Butterfly effect’ where it takes you back to past events and treasured memories and the effect uses takes you on an acid trip. The use of overlaying effect with the lens flare adds that vintage authenticity. The composition of text and the images work well together and the visual, colours are so rich. In my film, I want to emphasise the light as one of the main props to highlight the as the guide for loneliness

EVALUATION I based my final location at Idol Lane and St.Dunstan Lane which are two connected lanes. If I were to redo my genius loci again, I would have chosen a completely abandoned house in the middle of nowhere or an empty tram station. The things that limited me from finding these places was, because I live quite far away from everything so I can’t commute further out and also timing issues. I initially wanted to base my location on Addington village train station and film it at night but considering the dangers of that location is high. I’ve always found Addington village tram station as one of the locations that I grew attachment with. I love how the tracks are open and wide that you can just walk along the tracks but also ensure your own safety in case the tram arrives and you don’t want to get killed. I’ve always been fascinated with locations that are abandoned and fragile.
