Cassian respected his father, but in the way where an unknowing servant celebrates a tyrant. Perhaps his father was harsh, that he could see, but he only wanted to prove his father right. That he is a Ballad and would do everything in his power to be an enforcer, just like his ancestors before him.

Addimane parented his sons the same, his treatment towards Cassian almost a perfect reflection to how he treated Briar. Like cohorts of the same battalion. Addimane pushed his sons, Cassian and Briar alike, past their physical limits and mental capabilities when it came to shooting practice, or hand to hand combat. When his son was 8 years old, Addimane had Cassian train against him, leaving his son bruised on every joint by the time the sun fell. The only reason they called it a night for practice was because Briar happened to come home, and found their dad assessing everything wrong with Cassian's approach with the boy's chest pinned under his dad's knee. Even after Briar told off their dad, it didn't mean anything to him. So much so that he'd have Cassian practice shoot in the forest right after it'd rained out, and slipped on a mossy rock.

It only got worse once Briar died. It felt like Addimane had more disparity over the fact this event was gonna set Cassian's training back years, over the fact that his son literally passed. Despised his father, and his mother. He distanced himself from them, which was easy enough for him. His parents gave him space, surprisingly enough. They let him.. "grieve" or they so thought, thinking it was something he was going to move past in the next few months. When Cassian showed no signs of returning, pursuing his passion of maths and numbers, Addimane took matters into his own hands and enrolled him into Cadet Academy against Cassian's will. It didn't help when the headmistress of the academy was his own mother.
