This is a list of terms and customs found in the World of Emaris series that may differ from the real world, and therefore require further explanation.

  • Names
    • Children adopt the last name of the parent or ancestor they most resemble.
  • Cycles
    • Periods of 100 years. Most people of Emaris only live for a singular Cycle before perishing. Ivoryfeathers and Aurascynthes, however, tend to live much longer, and the Cycle members tasked with defeating Death live longer in order to train their successors before finally passing on.
  • Chosen
    • The chosen hero of each Cycle. Despite having many Cycle members, typically only one is selected as the Chosen Hero, and has a special marking designating them as such. They tend to have stronger magic or abilities than the rest.
  • Chuo’ri
    • Children who have gained immortality through a dangerous, life-threatening experiment. Very few have lived — there are only four known survivors. This scientific process was introduced in order to find a physical vessel for the Light, as foretold by the Icoryfeathers. Only one Chuo’ri has ever been deemed successful, as the other three have all been deemed failures.
  • Dualshade
    • One who possesses an association with both light and dark power, rather than of just one. Only two have been known to exist, and they are usually the targets of many acts of violence.
  • Elements
    • Each Cycle member is associated with an element, be it Fire, Water, Earth, Air, or Electricity. This may influence their talents and magical abilities to some extent.
