- Write like you are in love with the characters
- Give inanimate objects/places human descriptors & adjectives, break word associations
- Refrain from using thought verbs as much as possible
- Find what is sacred to the characters and make it sacred to you
- Write a sentence as though you cannot say exactly what you mean, write what exemplifies the emotion/event rather than the thing itself.
- Justify the character's loyalties so you understand why they love who they love and how they express their love
- Be sure to include yearning; never grant the characters the object of their desire for as long as you can.
- Use older language, forsake contractions, fewer contractions, and commas with conjunctions.
- Embrace rhythm and pulse in prose.
- Allow your themes and favorite words to haunt you in every work. Your obsessions are your lifeblood.
And for your own enjoyment, include your (gentle) own themes: more repression, more torturous yearning, more devotion, more betrayal, more self-sacrifice, more obsession, and more morality affected by love & loyalty.
