There may come a time when your character is in counter position, and you are actually attacked. In this case, you will enter what essentially boils down to a duel with the other person, where you will be rolling strength saving throws against each other.

I'm a regular character or rejected-role traitor, and I just countered an attack... Good! This means you were prepared for an attack. Good prediction skills. If you were attacked by the protagonist or a regular character, this will go down regularly. The GM will inform both parties that a counter has occurred, and that all night actions following the attack and counter have been cancelled for the moment. The person countering will be asked if they would like to perform a lethal, a nonlethal, or a block.

In a lethal, the one countering will have a strength saving throw rolled, as will the assailant. The winner will be informed of their win through a description of having overpowered the character, and the next round will begin. If the winner succeeds again, the loser will die. If the loser wins, the third round will determine the end result of the struggle.

In Example

GM, to XX in private: Your attack was countered by MC.

GM, to MC in private: You were attacked by XX, but countered it.

MC, to GM in private: I would like to lethally counter-attack.

GM, to XX in private: MC begins struggling with you over the weapon. [GM rolls strength saving throws for MC and XX.]

GM, to XX in private: You fight MC over the weapon. [Strength Saving Throw: 18+0=18.] Despite MC's efforts, it almost seems like they fork over the weapon to you.

GM, to MC in private: You fight XX over the weapon. [Strength Saving Throw: 5+0=5.] You fail miserably, and XX has grip back on the weapon. If you don't act quick, you're going to be killed!

In a nonlethal, the one countering will have to roll a dexterity saving throw, while the assailant rolls a strength saving throw.

In Example

GM, to XX in private: Your attack was countered by MC.

GM, to MC in private: You were attacked by XX, but countered it.

MC, to GM in private: I would like to perform a nonlethal.

GM, to XX in private: MC is aware of your intentions due to the counter and tries to run away. [Strength Saving Throw: 17+0]. Despite your attempts to grab MC and prevent them from running away, they bolt out of the room before you can cause any harm. Your attack has failed.

GM, to MC in private: You try to run from XX. [Dexterity Saving Throw: 20+0. CRITICAL HIT!] You're out of there quicker than a hare. You reach safety. You may reroute the rest of your night actions accordingly.

A block is essentially a nonlethal where you don't run away. If you lethally or nonlethally attack after a successful block, you get a heavy modifier [+3] added onto your regular modifier and only have to win one round, not best of three.

I'm the protagonist, traitor, or mastermind, and I just countered an attack...

If you are the mastermind or traitor, your modifier will be adjusted for this specific situation. While hidden as a simple X, it implies that you will always win a lethal, nonlethal, or block, as you have death immunity.

Committing a lethal as the mastermind means someone gets framed and wrongly executed, while as the traitor or protagonist you can actually be executed for the crime.

Like normal, your night actions following an attack/counter will be rerouted after the event is over.
