Even after playing the piano for over 10 years, I rarely realize that I think with what I call a “musician’s mind”. However, when I do, I realize how much one instrument has enriched my life. A “musician’s mind” is very different from a “non-musician’s mind”, though those who do not play an instrument would never be able to tell. Throughout the past 10 years and 3 months, each day of my life has been affected by skills and experiences I have had the privilege of possessing through music. Through playing the piano, I have learned to think of the world with a different point of view. For example, having a “musician’s mind” affects the way that I solve math problems. Though most people would view the two activities in completely different ways, I think of math problems in the same way that I think while playing the notes on a sheet of music. While playing music, one must consider every minor detail on the page. Without considering every minor detail, the song will not be played in the correct way. When solving a math problem, one must also consider every detail and every possible solution to achieve the correct answer. Like solving a math problem, music has also taught me a few things about the minor details in life in general. Throughout many moments of my every day life, I find myself narrating my experiences with music. During happy moments, I think of a tune that I would use to express my happiness with on the piano. During angry moments, I imagine a fast tune in a minor key flowing from my fingers. Music has also taught me to communicate with those around me in a more effective way. I find that being able to cultivate my feelings through playing a song on the piano is very similar to letting those feelings flow through words. In conclusion, playing music has greatly affected my mind. Through playing piano, I have learned to express myself. I have learned to consider problems in the same way that I think of playing a sheet music, whether the problems are related to math or working things out in my various relationships.
