I grew up in the 70s & 80s.
- call to get movie times over the phone!
- we use to be able to ride in the back of trucks.
- we went to drive-in movies
- we had to buy concert tickets at ticketmaster booths at the record stores and wait in line for hours
- we use to put things on layaway, no credit cards
- we listened to the radio and radio stations were very important
- HBO was a box you turned on with a key on top of your television set
- having a vcr and renting a movie was huge excitement
- we finally got a microwave when i was in high school
- being able to walk to the gate at the airport with your loved one or being able to welcome them at the gate
- i did not use a computer in high school. no internet or email, etc. i typed on an electric typewriter.
- we had to use the yellow pages to find businesses and if it wasn't in your city then you were outta luck
- no one had cell phones and the ones we'd see in the movies were huge
- people moved less
- we talked on rotary phones with super huge lengthy cords so we could simulate a cordless phone
- i lived through 8 tracks, records, cassettes and cds. i thought for sure cds were the end all be all of music listening platforms
- i walked around with my cassette tape walkman
- we didn't really know what celebrities were doing in their personal life. more focus was on musicians.
- the MTV awards would always look like a crazy fashion soup: cindy lauper, michael jackson, wham, madonna, duran duran, david bowie, etc. so much to look at!
- ARCADES. we hung out at the arcades.
- you could call the public library and get books on tape read to you over the phone by choosing your story and by pushing a button
- we played a lot of physical games because there were not many home video games accept atari: red rover, red light green light, simon says, duck duck goose, etc
- fashions changed quickly. some i remember in order of appearance: tuxedo tops, flash dance tops, denim stone wash in colors, bermuda shorts & surf wear, heavy metal looks and band buttons, polka dots, neon outfits, plastic shoes and purses, leggings, guess jeans, oversize androgynous shirts, etc.
- the mall was the coolest and best place to hang out
- we did not have atms. you had to go into a bank & see a teller to get cash.
- gay people in high school were not out. there were no gay straight alliances. just drama club.
