CAPITALIZATION

  • Capitalization Quiz
    • This quiz would make a great pre- and post- assessment for capitalization in a K–2 classroom, and might serve to jog students' memory in 3–4.
  • Capitals
    • This is a great worksheet aimed at first graders. I like that the worksheet has the helpful lines, so students can practice their handwriting while completing the worksheet.
  • What Gets a Capital Letter?
    • An anchor chart that covers all of the capitalizing bases, which would be useful to have up year-round in a K–3 classroom.

PUNCTUATION

  • Commas in a Series
    • As a die-hard Oxford comma fan, I felt the need to have a serial comma worksheet available at my disposal. I'd probably have this around for use during a punctuation unit, and remind my students that though the use of the Oxford comma is debated and I will not be taking off points if a student doesn't use it, I would very much prefer it be used.
  • Punctuation with the Pigeon
    • I love that this anchor chart comes paired with a mentor text, and lists more than just the period, exclamation point, and question mark. I'd put this up in my class after doing an interactive read-aloud of Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! by Mo Willems.
  • Quotation Mark Showdown
    • This worksheet can be played as part of a game (instructions are written on the sheet), or I could print a master copy, black out the irrelevant instructions, and turn it into an independent activity.

BOTH

  • Does Your Sentence Have SWAG?
    • While I'm not the biggest fan of acronymizing everything and slapping it on an anchor chart, I think kids would appreciate having an excuse to overuse the word swag. I would absolutely have this up from the first day of a 3rd grade classroom, and implement it letter by letter in K–2.
  • Letter Fix
    • This would be a great transition from perfecting sentences to letter writing as kind of a preassessment for letter writing. I'd readminister this worksheet after teaching about friendly letters to see how far my students have progressed.
  • Proofreading
    • This worksheet is great practice with editing skills, and can be used as a trial run to see which students can be trusted to proofread for others towards the beginning of the year.
  • Review: Punctuation, Quotations, and Capitalization
    • As the title says, this worksheet should be used for a review in a fourth or fifth grade class. There's a lot going on in this worksheet, so I might not even give it as a preview to avoid overwhelming my students. Bonus point to the students who add Oxford commas. :)
  • Run-On Sentence Practice
    • Correcting run-on sentences is great for practicing capitalization and punctuation as well as improving students' editing skills.
