• Combining Sentences
    • Great worksheet I'd use to help students practice combining sentences. I like that the first one is done for you, as examples always calm a student who's unsure of him/herself.
  • Compound Sentences
    • This worksheet not only explains what compound sentences and coordinating conjunctions are—it gives students twenty pairs of sentences to combine, and the PDF includes the answer key! This would be a great worksheet to give when I have to have a sub. Even if the sub somehow flubs the teaching portion, the worksheet explains it quite well.

  • Dictionary Hunt
    • I love this because it will familiarize kids with the scary dictionary, and may teach students the words surrounding their spelling words as well.
  • Secret Code Spelling
    • Artistic students will love this! I think students will get so lost in making sure they're coding and decoding correctly, they'll forget they're practicing their spelling words!
  • Spelling Roll-a-Word
    • This would be great for a spelling center: give each student 3–5 words, and have students roll a die to determine what to do with those words.

  • "I Am" Poem
    • "I Am" poems are a great way to get to know kids at the beginning of the year, then pulled out to introduce a poetry unit—"See? You're already a poet!"
  • Paint Chip Poetry Example
    • I love this activity—writing poetry on colors and emotions. Great for deconstructing how students feel and demonstrating how poetry uses flowery-yet-powerful language. This would be a great example for students I'd project on the board.
  • Poetry Scavenger Hunt A + B
    • What I love about this resource is that there are two versions, so you can choose which best fits the poem in question, or save one version to be done at a later date (especially if you know you'll have to...

CAPITALIZATION

  • Capitalization Quiz
    • This quiz would make a great pre- and post- assessment for capitalization in a K–2 classroom, and might serve to jog students' memory in 3–4.
  • Capitals
    • This is a great worksheet aimed at first graders. I like that the worksheet has the helpful lines, so students can practice their handwriting while completing the worksheet.
  • What Gets a Capital Letter?
    • An anchor chart that covers all of the capitalizing bases, which would be useful to have up year-round in a K–3 classroom.

PUNCTUATION

  • Expository Writing: Idea Helper
    • I'd hesitate to use this with a beginning EL in a lower grade, but an intermediate third, fourth, or fifth grader would have few problems following this. I like that it numbers the paragraphs.
  • Fictional Narrative Writing
    • This is intended for first grade, but using this anchor chart to model planning a story would familiarize ELs with planning, and would be helpful for everyone else in the class to see, too.
  • "How to" Writing Graphic Organizer
    • This graphic organizer allows a space for ELs to draw pictures, has minimal words, and the writing spaces are large enough to get points across, yet small enough to not feel intimidating. I'd possibly mode...

  • 6 Traits Writing
    • A very simple (if not plain-looking) rubric for students to use. The language is vague enough to be used as a tool to evaluate one's own writing or a peer's work.
  • Kid-Friendly Rubric for Six Traits
    • It is indeed kid-friendly, and could be used as The Writing Rubric throughout the year. Easily printed out and pasted into a student's writing notebook for easy reference and to double-check work.
  • Kindergarten Writing Self-Evaluation
    • I'd let the students begin self-evaluating as soon as possible in the school year. These could be saved and shown to students to prove growth when they feel stuck. I like that the smiley faces make the rubric easy to understand.

PREFIXES

  • MIS–, NON–, EX–, CO–, ANTI–
    • I like this worksheet because it has space on the bottom to use different root words with the given prefixes. I'd use this after preteaching prefixes and root words.
  • Prefixes: Make a New Word
    • A good prefix worksheet that can be doubled as a way to check the neatness of students' handwriting.
  • UN– & DIS–
    • Worksheet for first graders. Good to give when a substitute has to come in because the definitions of prefix are already on the paper if they need a refresher.

  • ABC Handwriting Practice
    • A generic print handwriting worksheet that would best be used for K–3 students who have trouble with neatness, or perhaps differentiating capital and lowercase letters.
  • Left-Handed D'Nealian Cursive
    • Handwriting sheets are not often lefty-friendly, so I had to save this when I found it.
  • D'Nealian ABC's
    • For students who need a little help writing letters (younger students, ELs who learned a different alphabet, etc.), this would be something to print and have the student practice, or paste it into the inside cover of a composition notebook as a reference.
