- with natural colour dye, the longer you leave it in your hair the darker it will go and no matter what colour it's supposed to be it will turn dark brown or black
- take the instructional times as guidelines not rules
- you shouldn't use any products in your hair in the 24 hours before dyeing it - products in the hair will create a shield so that the hair can't absorb the dye as much
- ideally you shouldn't use any products or heat on your hair in the first 3 days after dyeing it - it takes 3 days for the hair follicles to completely take in the dye
- semi-permanent is pretty useless, it'll fade within a couple of weeks
- schwarzkoff and loreal are the best brands. Clairol and garnier fade out faster
- foam hair dyes last a lot longer than liquid dyes, but they're stronger so they come out dark - clairol always came out black despite it meant to be being brown
- if you do root touch up medium brown is best
- use shampoo to help remove hair dye stains on skin/scalp
- permanent hair dye doesn't mean it lasts until it grows out, it just means it won't wash out and permanently effects your hair. Permanent hair dye will fade out gradually from sunlight, pollution, heat (e.g. hairdyers + hair straightners)
- hair dye stains things quickly, clean it up asap!
- it's better to dye your hair in layers
- remove hair dye stains in the bathroom with nail polish remover
- red/purple/pink shades bleed when you wash your hair or when your hair is damp for a few weeks after dyeing so use old towels, don't wear white or pale tops that touch your neck, don't wear scarves
- some shades bleed for longer than other shades - pure purple bleeds for longer than red shades
