things worth carrying on the way
for the heart
- feelings are not always pleasant, but they are not something to be ashamed of - they are what makes us human. what matters is how we choose to act upon them.
- try speaking to yourself as you would to a dear friend. you deserve some of the patience and understanding you so willingly give to others.
- changing your mind does not make your former self foolish. sometimes growing means understanding something differently than you once did.
- someone else's happiness is not a measure of what is missing from your life. there is room in this world for many different kinds of beautiful lives.
- i'm learning that i can be proud of who i used to be without wishing to become that person again.
- you need not become an entirely different person to become a better one. perhaps there are already lovely things within you worth tending to.
- making a mistake does not make you a bad person, but recognizing it is only the beginning. when possible, make amends, learn something, and try to do differently next time.
- you can admire someone without wishing to become them. let inspiration help you discover your own possibilities, rather than forget your own nature.
- i'm learning to be less frightened of not knowing. there is something rather wonderful about having a whole lifetime left to discover things.
for difficult days
- when everything feels overwhelming, begin with the essentials. a difficult day is not a failure simply because less was accomplished.
- when a task feels enormous, make the beginning very small. sometimes five gentle minutes are enough to find your way into the next five.
- if your thoughts are tangled, try putting them on paper. worries can become easier to understand when they no longer have to live entirely inside your head.
- before worrying over a problem, ask what can actually be done about it. take the next possible step, seek help if needed, and allow yourself to rest when nothing more can be done for now.
- when emotions are running high, give important words and decisions a little time to settle. not every feeling requires an immediate response.
- sometimes a change of scenery, a familiar song, or a conversation with someone dear can make a heavy afternoon a little easier to carry.
- remember that a difficult chapter is still only a chapter. there may be things waiting on the following pages that you cannot imagine yet.
- asking for help is not an admission of defeat. sometimes the next step becomes possible simply because someone is willing to walk beside us.
- when things do not turn out as expected, allow yourself to be disappointed without deciding that everything has gone wrong. a different outcome may still have something worthwhile to offer.
for living well
- a simpler life is not necessarily an emptier one. making room for what matters often means gently letting go of what does not.
- value your time not only by what you accomplish, but by how meaningfully you spend it. rest, play, and daydreaming belong to a life well lived, too.
- a routine should serve the person living it. if something no longer works for you, adjusting it is not a failure of discipline, but an act of understanding.
- not everything that is good for someone else will be good for you. learn from others without forgetting to listen to yourself.
- i'm learning to admire beautiful things without feeling the need to possess them, and to appreciate an experience without having to turn it into an achievement.
- make room for little pleasures that ask for nothing in return. not every lovely thing needs a purpose beyond being lovely.
- dreams are lovely things to carry, but they need not make the present feel like a waiting room. there is a life worth living while you are on your way to another.
- make a little room for curiosity. learning something simply because it interests you is a perfectly good use of an afternoon.
for one another
- listen before reaching for an answer. sometimes a person needs advice, and sometimes they simply need someone willing to sit beside them.
- kindness can be wonderfully ordinary : remembering a little detail, asking about someone's day, or sending something because it made you think of them.
- allow people their own ways of showing affection. a quieter friendship is not necessarily a lesser one.
- closeness cannot be hurried. trust grows through patience, consistency, and the freedom to open up in one's own time.
- not every friendship must become a great intimacy. some people are lovely little neighbours in our lives, and the warmth we exchange with them is meaningful, too.
- when someone needs solitude, try not to mistake their quietness for rejection. affection and independence can exist together.
- i'm learning that caring for someone does not mean having the answers to their troubles. sometimes the most loving thing i can offer is simply my presence.
- do not stand above others, nor place yourself beneath them. we are all learning something from one another.
- when you have hurt someone, try to understand the hurt before explaining your intentions. a sincere apology makes room for another person's feelings.
- be curious about lives unlike your own. what brings someone else happiness may not appeal to you, but it can still be precious to them.
for keeping your peace
- saying no to something is sometimes how we make room to say yes to what truly matters.
- you can be understanding of someone's feelings without making yourself responsible for resolving them.
- not every misunderstanding needs a lengthy explanation, and not every disagreement needs to become a debate. sometimes a few thoughtful words, or a little silence, will do.
- boundaries are not punishments for other people. they are ways of being honest about what we can offer, accept, and comfortably live with.
- forgiveness and reconciliation are not always the same thing. you may let go of resentment without returning to a situation that repeatedly hurts you.
- i'm still learning that being useful is not what makes me worthy of affection. i would like to be loved for the person i am, not only for what i can give.
- it is possible to remain gentle without making yourself endlessly available. a kind heart deserves a peaceful home within its own person, too.
- you cannot always prevent someone from misunderstanding you. explain yourself with honesty when it matters, but remember that being understood by everyone is not a requirement for living peacefully.
- i'm learning to distinguish between what is mine to improve and what is simply beyond my control. the difference can save a great deal of unnecessary worry.
for the digital world
- remember that the internet offers glimpses into other people's lives, not their entirety. there is little kindness in comparing your ordinary days to someone else's carefully chosen moments.
- be thoughtful about what you invite into your little corner of the web. you are allowed to mute, unfollow, leave, and return when something no longer feels good for you.
- numbers can tell us how many people noticed something, but very little about how deeply it mattered to them.
- you do not need to be constantly present to remain a good friend. a thoughtful message after some time away can mean more than a hundred hurried interactions.
- make things because you love making them. sharing can be a lovely part of creation, but it need not become the reason everything exists.
- i'm learning to let my little creations live without continually checking how they are received. something made with love has already been worth making.
- the internet is a place we visit, and sometimes a place we lovingly build. may it remain a window into a fuller life, rather than a reason to neglect the one beyond the window.
