• Governor's Island; free ferry running between BKLYN and Manhattan through Sept. 25 on Fri., Sat., and Sun. until 5pm. No cars there; free concerts. Friday afternoons: free 1-hour bike rentals - enough time to explore the island.
• Staten Island via ferry, bus from midtown, or high finished subway tunnel from Brooklyn. FDR Boardwalk, less urban areas.
• Explore northern NJ via PATH or NJ Transit. Union City, etc.
• Alphabet City: bookstore, $1.50 empanadas, the architectural wonder that is Cooper Union, Raj Mahal on Curry Row (4-course dinner special; occasionally offers you wine with dinner if you look old enough.)
• Take more buses to see lots of the city without walking. Longest bus route: M101, 12 miles between Wash. Heights and the East Village.
