- the sciences when removed from the context of people, and humanities, becomes a bit joyless for me. when studying for mcat i hit a bit of a block at one point. i was desperately looking for a reason...some motivation. as cheesy as it sounds, i started watching these interviews from stanford doctors about why they went into medicine. they all talked about the people. how the science is for the people. and when put in that context i found i was able to enjoy it again.

- Paul Kalanithi - When Breath Becomes Air: With my renewed focus, informed consent - the ritual by which a patient signs a piece of paper, authorizing surgery - became not a juridical exercise in naming all the risks as quickly as possible, like the voiceover in an ad for a new pharmacist, but an opportunity to forge a covenant with a suffering compatriot. Here we are together, and here are the ways through - I promise to guide you as best as I can, to the other side.
- ^ - Openness to human relationality does not mean revealing grand truths from the apse; it means meeting patients where they are, in the narthex or nave, and bringing them as far as you can.
- Lucy Kalanithi: trying to grapple with existential distress with medical knowledge and statistics is like trying to quench a thirst with salty water. you just can't...

- camera lucida - women are constantly looking at themselves from outside of the conscious, as if their point of view is in the camera that follows them at all moments - even at a women's husband's funeral, as she cries she is watching herself from a camera's point of view, conscious of whether or not her mascara is running down her face

- if you see someone being interrupted in a conversation, acknowledge them, don’t let them be pushed to the side. if you see someone lagging behind, walk beside them. if someone is being ignored, take the step to include them. always remind people of their worth. it hurts when it feels like you’re being forgotten. that small gesture can mean a lot.

“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

- "The house has grown into a knowledgeable witness. It has been party to early seductions, it has watched homework being written, it has observed swaddled babies freshly arrived from hospital, it has been surprised in the middle of the night by whispered conferences in the kitchen. It has experienced winter evenings when its windows were as cold as bags of frozen peas and midsummer dusks when its brick walls held the warmth of newly baked bread. It has provided not only physical but also psychological sanctuary. It has been a guardian of identity."

Children pray late at night when no gods hear their whispers. Silence filled right to the brim with tears made out of blisters.
Some many years ago, she was born to a mother and a father who were too old to be in love. They gave her what she knows and what she knows is not enough. So if you asked her what she loved, she would say she does not know. Though when the moonlight shined through those thick curtained windows, her clasped hands rose to her head and she whispered to her heart, “I know you are not there, but living in some elsewhere.”

- “The nuns taught us there are two ways through life, the way of Nature and the way of Grace. You have to choose which one you'll follow. Grace doesn't try to please itself. Accepts being slighted, forgotten, disliked. Accepts insults and injuries. Nature only wants to please itself. Get others to please it too. Likes to lord it over them. To have its own way. It finds reasons to be unhappy when all the world is shining around it. And love is smiling through all things.”
-- Terrence Malick, Tree of Life
