— As a Christian, when you first read about the Unforgivable Sin, or Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, it's enough to make your stomach turn.. But what IS it exactly? And how can we know if we've committed such a thing?
WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?
- Matthew: 31-32
- ↪ And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
- Mark 3:29
- ↪ But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin.
- Luke 12:10
- ↪ And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
WHAT EXACTLY IS THE UNFORGIVABLE SIN?
- The Unforgivable Sin means to deny the works of Christ until your final breath. Period. It means your entire life: you knew about Jesus, knew about all that he did for us but it did not lead to repentance or a softened heart, ultimately rejecting the love of the Father. Let me clarify that this isn't the same as a 'moment of rebellion' in ones life. It is a lifelong and deliberate rejection of Christ.
I'M WORRIED I'VE COMMITED THIS SIN.. HOW CAN I KNOW IF I HAVE OR HAVEN'T?
- To be worried at all if you've committed the Unforgivable Sin is a sign that you haven't/aren't actively doing so. People that don't care about having a relationship with Jesus don't worry about this kind of thing. Their hearts are typically indifferent, dismissive or hardened towards spiritual matters. The fact that you are worried is evidence that your heart is still tender, responsive, and that you're seeking to stay in His will. You value your relationship with God. He will know you're after His heart, and honors those who earnestly seek Him.
- 1 Samuel 16:7
- ↪ The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.
