• Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland by Gerald Clarke

I cried on the #45 bus when I got to the end (when Judy overdoses and dies on the toilet). Her mom started her on the uppers and downers when she was a teenager...just really unfortunate.

  • Zelda by Nancy Milford

Another unfortunate story (maybe a theme is starting to emerge here...I like the stories about the crazy ladies, who perhaps suffer from an addiction on top of everything else).

  • Wasted by Marya Hornbacher

This was a difficult read, and I avoided this book for quite a while, probably because I can relate.

  • Just Desserts: Martha Stewart, The Unauthorized Biography by Jerry Oppenheimer

I tend to stay away from unauthorized biographies, but I read this one cover to cover. Martha ripping out her own hair! Running over her soon-to-be-ex husband's shit in the driveway! Cleaning sprees at 3 o'clock in the morning!

  • Bobbed Hair and Bathtub Gin: Writers Running Wild in the Twenties by Marion Meade

Covers the lives of Zelda Fitzgerald, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Edna Ferber and Dorothy Parker.

  • Running With Scissors and Dry by Augusten Burroughs
  • The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank
