  • Get up an hour earlier than usual.

Use the time to do some gentle yoga poses, take a walk, or slowly ease into the day instead of frantically running into the shower, driving, or walking to the office, and sitting at your desk before your body has even had enough time to adjust to the new day. It sets the tone for a mellower, happier day.

  • Make a to-do list in the morning.

Make it attainable and realistic and you'll feel good at the end of the day seeing all those check marks.

  • Make movement non-negotiable.

Halfway through your morning and through the afternoon, make a point to stand up and walk around. Walk around your office, take a stroll down the block, whatever you have time for. Do this as often as poss...

  • Write a To-Learn List. We’ve all wondered what it would be like to speak a different language, play an instrument, build websites, master public speaking etc., but with the distraction of our academic study, our jobs and our everyday lives, these desires can be vague and unclear and therefore often unattainable. Why not try compiling a list of all the things you’d like to learn, either a list for life, or just in the next five years.
  • Write a To-Go-To List. Travel isn’t on all of our agendas, but it’s pretty high on most. Why not compile a list of the next five places you would love to travel, perhaps adding how long you would like to go for, who you would like to go with, and what you’ll do there. This doesn’t have to be reserved for epic overseas adventures; weekends away or daytrips to places nearer by are perhaps even more im...

  • Try easy things first. Recycle junk mail, magazines/newpapers, expired foods, broken items, old schedules, coupons etc.
  • Start small and build momentum. The dining table, the mantel, a kitchen drawer is a good place to begin. Trick yourself into doing a small area and once you finish it, you’ll have more energy to tackle the larger ones.
  • Complete one area at a time. Do not go back and forth between different areas. You end up scattering your energy and won’t see results anywhere.
  • Clean up after each session. Take the garbage to the dump. Place donation bags, dr...

This is temporary. I’ve had days where my suffering seemed truly insurmountable, like I really couldn’t survive another moment, but I did and miraculously, sometimes even just days later, things got a lot better.

  • 2. Forget an explanation.

Often during hard times, we fixate on the cause of the situation. One of the human race’s most persistent questions is why do bad things happen? And why do they happen to people who don’t deserve them? Here is the only answer to that question—they just do. Questioning the hows and whys of tragedy is a futile waste of time.

The point is not to sit around and wonder how the Universe could let terrible things happen or to ask why bad things happen...

20 Steps to Genuine Happiness1: Self-Acceptance: There’s no happiness if you’re not OK with who you are. Accepting yourself as you are now is the best motivation for you to work harder at having a better life.

2: Consciousness: Happiness is more likely when you see the truth about people and things, when you have your priorities straight and give up the false, “quick and easy” solutions to your problems.

3: Kindness: When you open your heart to the needs and feelings of others, it simultaneously fills your heart. When you can give freely and let go of greedy consumerism, the happier and more fulfilled you’ll be.

4: Patience: If you must have everything immediately, it creates anxiety and stress. When you can wait for things to evolve and trust the process, happiness is more likely to find you.

33 Ways to Start your Day

Mornings are underrated. I consider them fundamental for the whole diurnal experience. What you do in the very first moments of your morning will fundamentally and inexorably shape your entire day. Most of the time you spend your mornings by routinely performing some habits, on auto pilot. Hence, your days will routinely unfold towards you, the same way day after day, on auto pilot.

Consciously inserting your intentions in these very first moments will have a huge effect. Taking charge of those moments it’s like activating some subtle, unconscious triggers which will ultimately determine your whole daily experience, exactly the way you want. Mornings are fundamental. This is why I experimented a lot with my very first moments of the day.

Here are at least 33 ways in which you can transform your days by only spending 5 ...

Tool 1: Resolutions

Commit to concrete, measurable actions

The Resolutions tool is the most important tool in the Happiness Project Toolbox. It allows you to commit to a resolution in writing and to track your progress. Frequently reviewing your resolutions keeps them uppermost in your mind, and scoring yourself gives you visible feedback. One suggestion: by framing a resolution as a concrete action (“Rent a movie once a week”) instead of an abstract goal (“Have more fun”) and by holding yourself accountable, you’re more likely to make progress.

If you make your Resolutions public, you can inspire other people, as well.

Tool 2: Group Resolution

Challenge a group to keep a resolution

The Group Resolutions tool allows you to commit to a resolution with a group, which is a great way to get the encouragement...

  • 1. Find the lesson.

Every person or situation, no matter how much they may break your heart or drive you crazy, is here to teach you something.

We are energy manifested in a physical form. Before we come into these bodies, we have an idea of the lessons we need to learn and who's going to teach us.

Instead of harping on why your relationship didn’t work out, be introspective and look at what that person was here to teach you. Your ex may be long gone, but the lesson remains and that lesson becomes a vital component to your growth and evolution going forward.

She glances up at you momentarily, making direct eye contact in a way that seems to communicate a subtle curiosity. For a split second it makes you think… and then it’s gone. • Find an organizing style and pace that suits you. Organization is only maintainable if it fits into your daily life.
  • Divide & conquer – cut an organizing project into manageable pieces. For example, do one cabinet, shelf or closet and finish that space before you move on to the next.
  • Every item must have a home of its own.
  • Resist the urge to procrastinate! With clutter, there is no ‘later’, there is only ‘more’.
  • Good enough is good enough – procrastination is often a form of perfectionism. Just aim for progress.
  • When tackling clutter, start with an honest evaluation of your stuff. Be brutal – if you don’t need it, use it or love it, get rid of it.

Make lists of reasons why you love yourself… & write down (or keep mental lists) of the compliments other people give you. We’re so quick to believe people when they say nasty, unkind or “brutally honest” (ahem, cruel) things to or about us, & we discard all the times we’re told how amazing, beautiful or intelligent we are. Usually this is because our sense of self-doubt is stronger than our self-love. If you can build up the love side of things, this will begin to change.

Reach out to others…

  • ..& do it regularly. When we don’t talk to people about how we’re feeling, or don’t have anyone to bounce ideas around with, it can be easy to feel lost, confused & out of touch. It also makes it easier for depression & sadness to nibble at our toes. Being reminded that the world is bigger than our bubble can inspire & u...
