• A summer thunderstorm that began with a black wall of clouds creeping across the sky like a blanket lit by lightning. People in other cars were watching it, too.
  • Watching flickers of lightning and approaching dark clouds while walking home with my mother, and then running when the heavy rain fell and thunder got too loud.
  • Going for a walk with a beach umbrella when the rain had been falling for days. The road was flooded over the curb, so I found and unclogged a drain with my foot and watched two whirlpools form with a loud sucking sound as the water drained.
  • The thunderstorm that caused several tornado warnings and knocked out power for three or four days. There was a power line down across our driveway.
  • Being driven home in a snowstorm so bad that the freeway was closed while being guided through back roads by my mother, who was at home with a map. The drive normally took an hour, but driving blind, it took more than two.
