- "Ophelia" - The Lumineers
- Probably just the best overall track of 2016, from the best album of 2016. During the spring I wrote two notebooks' worth of a novel using this as my writing-motivation theme song.
- "Jealous Guy" (live version) - Donny Hathaway
- My obsession with this John Lennon cover started during a bleak, heartache-ridden November, and continues into 2017. Donny Hathaway could SING.
- "Dreamer" - Astrud Gilberto
- A perfect soundtrack for losing your heart (which I sorta-kinda did this fall), with a bossa nova twist. <3
- "Happy Birthday" - Loretta Lynn
- This one was fail-safe pick-me-up, especially post-breakup. ;)
- "Message" - Patrick James
- I don't know if this makes sense, but when I first heard "Message," it was like meeting another person who you feel as though you've known in a previous life. There's something so "familiar" about the melody. Somehow it matches my interior life.
- "So Very Hard to Go" - Tower of Power
- My dad shared this with me earlier in the year, and it was a love-at-first-listen. I think it's the absolute *perfect* old-school R&B song.
- "Winter Trees" - The Staves
- During the early spring I was smitten with The Staves (still am, a little bit). All of their songs are lovely, but this was the first one that hooked me.
- "Annabelle Lee" - Sarah Jarosz
- "Gotta Have You" - The Weepies
- "Gravity" - Sara Bareilles
- "Half The World Away" - Aurora
- "Hell No" - Ingrid Michaelson
- "Ho Hey" - The Lumineers
- "It Will Come Back" - Hozier
- "Midnight in Harlem" - Tedeschi Trucks Band
- "Moonshiner's Daughter" - Rhiannon Giddens
- "Only Wanna Be With You" - Hootie & the Blowfish
- "Unknown Legend" - Shovels & Rope
- "When I Fall in Love" - Nat King Cole
- "You Still Hurt Me" - William Fitzsimmons
