- narcissism epidemic in america (and probably anywhere else with a large digital population)
- internet allows teenage narcissists to engage in a shallow, one way directional relationship (towards themselves) with social media. There is a potential vast audience to engage with their content
- users can carefully curate what they share as they hide all their flaws, only showing the best parts of themselves. As a result, comparison is invited to the chat (lol) as users/followers compare themselves to whatever’s being posted (which isn’t even a real depiction of life in the first place!)
- Social media encourages behaviors like 'bios' which is essentially an identity statement to introduce yourself, a megaphone for self-promotion
- (online gaming) ‘pro players’ are seen to be acting out in public as they don’t think the rules apply to them. Or gamers rage easily when they lose a match and it takes time to rebuild their ego
- (Facebook and other online sites should not be the only blame for the rise of narcissism?) While online sites do fuel the narcissism epidemic,, it can also be a scrapegoat to the spike. There is research showing that personality is fairly developed by age 7, while face book's policies have restricted only ages 13 and above to sign in.
- Narcissism could be due to the rise in the over indulgent parenting
