- hanaemi (花笑み) - a smile as beautiful when flowers bloom.
- hikikomori (ひきこもり) (n.) - an adolescent who has withdrawn from social life, often obsessed with television, internet and video games, and rarely ever leaves one's room
- ichigo ichie (一期一会) (n.) - one time, one meeting ; an encounter that only happens once in a lifetime, reminding to treasure every moment, for it will never recur
- ichijitsu senshuu (一日千秋) - "one day seems like a thousand years"
- ikigai (生き甲斐) - the reason for existing
- koinoyokan (恋の予感) - the sense one can have upon first meeting a person that the two of you are going to fall in love. Differs from “love at first sight” as it does not imply that the feeling of love exists, only the knowledge that a future love is inevitable.
- komorebi (木漏れ日) - the sort of scattered, dappled light effect that happens when sunlight shines in through tree leaves.
- tsundoku (積ん読) - buying books and not reading them; letting books pile up on shelves or floors or nightstands
- yugen (幽玄)- an awareness of the universe that triggers emotional responses too deep and mysterious to be described
- "读万卷书不如行万里路。" - reading ten thousand books is not as useful as traveling ten thousand miles
- tameiki (ため息) - a sigh; deep breath
