Seasons 1-3: Unfortunately this show has angst in almost every episode, and at the beginning, I really like most of it!

  • Season 1
    • 1.1 Pilot- Joey tells Dawson she's not sure they can be friends anymore; she says, "It's not that I wanted to be holding your hand; I just didn't want her holding it." (liar!); Pacey tells Tamara she blew it and says, "I'm the best sex you'll never have!" (Overconfident for a 15 year old) Tamara acts kind of sketchy with Pacey considering she is a teacher
    • 1.3 Kiss- Dawson's dad is telling him how to kiss and Joey pretends that Dawson is kissing her; it's kind of sketchy though because Dawson is holding a bust of Joey's head that he uses in his movie when her head gets knocked off by the swamp creature played by Pacey; Joey won't kiss the random rich boy later even though she's attracted to him because she can't let go of the idea that Dawson will be her first kiss
    • 1.4 Discovery- When Dawson finds out Joey knew his mom was having an affair, he goes to Jen, but Jen tells him about her sexual/drug doing history (e.g. being caught high on Ecstasy in her father's bed with Billy before being sent to Capeside to live with her grandmother); Dawson freaks out and goes back to Joey to talk about Jen; Joey says the subtext is making her tired after this conversation-Dawson: This isn't just about yesterday Joey. It's about last week, last month, everything between us recently. We just, we're not getting along the same way we used to.Joey: So the friendship? You don't think we're friends anymore?Dawson: I don't know, are we more? Are we less? All I know is that it's just not the way it used to be. I fear nothing is anymore.Joey: It's called social evolution Dawson. What's strong enough flourishes and what doesn't we look behind glass cases in science museums; then Joey says they're definitely Smithsonian bound
    • 1.5 Hurricane- Mitch finds out about Gale's affair and they have an intense conversation during the hurricane and he drives away in the pouring rain
    • 1.6 Baby- Joey freaks out when Bessie goes into labor and they can't get to the hospital in time; they go to Dawson's house because their phone isn't working and Bessie's delivery is complicated so they have to go get Grams from next door; Joey talks to Dawson about how Bessie is reminding her of when her mom was dying, and she never wanted to hear anyone in that kind of pain again; Tamara has to leave Capeside when the rumor about her and Pacey goes public; Tamara is standing out by the water near her house; Tamara tells Pacey they're having a Pinter moment when more is said in what remains unspoken and there's a lot of sadness while Northern Lad plays; Tamara tells Pacey good-bye and he tells her he could handle kissing her, but she says she couldn't; they hug and she kisses him on the forehead and goes back to her house
    • 1.7 Detention- Joey starts talking about how she's already found the right guy but she doesn't know what to do about her feelings and she makes everyone uncomfortable because she starts crying; Dawson says, "Jo I was here for you in the 5th grade, I'm here for you now." He's so oblivious he's the only one who doesn't realize she's in love with him
    • Joey's almost confession
    • 1.9 Boyfriend- Jen breaks up with Dawson because she says she needs to spend some time alone after her ex comes to see her; she says though she's lucky, she's still way too unhappy most of the time; Joey gets drunk at a beach party and Pacey punches a guy who won't stop hitting on her (who keeps calling her Chloe) but Joey just thanks Dawson; they bring her home and Dawson tells Joey he knows their relationship is confusing (while she's passed out)& asks if she wanted to get drunk to escape her life; she sits up and kisses him before laying down again; Dawson tells Pacey she mistook him for Brad Pitt, which is understandable but Pacey said she didn't mistake him for anyone- Pacey: Oh, Dawson, my fine, oblivious friend. One of these days, you're gonna have to take a gigantic fact-check my friend, all right. She didn't mistake you for anybody, okay. This girl (Joey) is head-in-the-clouds, one hundred percent, ass-backwards in love with you, all right?
    • 1.10 Double Date- Dawson is jealous when Pacey tells him he's attracted to Joey, and Pacey says, "You don't want her, but you don't want anyone else to have her either?" Dawson takes it back, but Joey rejects Pacey when he kisses her anyway
    • 1.11 The Scare- Dawson tells Joey he would be inconsolable if she died, because she tries to tell him he wouldn't care if she were dead after she fell out of a closet earlier with blood on her neck as a prank to scare him
    • 1.12 Beauty Contest- Dawson falls for Joey after he sees her in the pageant (though she mangles On My Own, which is super sad); Joey tells him they can't be together because he only realized he liked her when she was wearing lipstick and hairspray, and she wanted him to realize they have more than just a passing physical attraction and shouldn't risk their friendship even though she's wanted to be with him forever; Pacey talks to Jen about how she wants Dawson back now that he wants someone else; she says, "You really think I'm that shallow?" He replies, "I think you're that human." Jen tries to get Dawson back but he says he can't because of Joey, and Jen looks crushed
    • 1.13 Decisions- Joey goes to visit her father in prison and she talks about how every day she feels like no one loves her; her dad asked Dawson to tell him about her daughter, and they play Dawson/Joey theme music as it becomes apparent he's in love with her, so the next day Joey's dad says, "Dawson Leery loves you Joey, and so do I." Jen's grandpa dies and she randomly goes to sleep in Dawson's room and Joey comes in the window and sees them laying together on the bed and runs away down the dock; Dawson yells for her out the window, and Jen keeps saying Joey will be ok (no she won't, she thinks Jen and Dawson had sex); Joey wants to go to Paris to study art, and she asks Dawson to give her a reason to stay, but he won't do anything forever; finally he kisses her and she decides to stay in Capeside (it's weird though because it seems like it's Christmas time in Capeside, Mass. and Joey keeps wearing tank tops)
  • Season 2
    • 2.4 Tamara's Return- Pacey kisses Tamara intensely in a warehouse Tamara is selling to Mitch; Pacey asks if she misses "teaching," implying him, and she says she does; Joey bonds with Jack over her art, and Joey tells Dawson she's scared because she didn't have anything in her life outside of him so she needs to develop herself as an individual

    • 2.6 The Dance- Dawson finds out Joey and Jack kissed after Joey and Jack dance together and talk about it; Dawson fights with Joey and a huge crowd gathers; Dawson goes home and Joey's sitting in his room crying; she tells him she's been pulling away from him since they got together because she needs to figure out how to make herself happy; she can't always rely on him to make her happy; he says he loves her, and she says she loves him too, but then she leaves; Dawson freaks out and asks why she's leaving if they love each other, but she runs away from his house crying; he throws things and stares after her; then he gets angry and kicks Joey's ladder to his window away; Pacey dances with a cheerleader he had a crush on forever, and won't dance with Andie; Andie sees him and runs away crying; Pacey finds her at the docks and asks why she likes him anyway; she answers but she says he doesn't deserve to hear her say these things; he asks her to dance there on the dock and they kiss

    • 2.12 Uncharted Waters- (Pacey has just won a first place trophy for catching a large blue marlin fish)Sheriff John Witter: Well, be proud of yourself. Enjoy this moment. A loser like you probably won't have many more like it.Pacey's dad is passed out and Pacey delivers the following monologue where he pretends he says his father's part of the conversation too: So I guess this is as good of time as any to have that father-son talk. (In a gruff voice) So, how ya doin' in school, Pacey? (Back to normal) Actually, Dad, I'm doing alright. I'm really turning things around. Turns out I'm pretty smart. (Gruff voice) Good man, Pacey. Always knew you'd turn out to be something. How the ladies treating you? (Back to normal) Well, I met this woman. (Gruff voice) Is she cute? (Back to normal) (Laughs) Aw, cute, man. Andie's beautiful. She's smart. She's funny. I tell ya, this girl is something special. For whatever reason, she seems to think I'm pretty special, too. Why can't you see that? Why can't you see me, huh? When did you give up on me? When I was 5? 10? 12? I'm 16 years old, Dad! (Starting to cry)) And I'm here and I'm not provin' that but I'm trying so hard for you. It's your job. It's your job to love me no matter who I am or what I become because you're my father! You're my dad! You're supposed to love me you son of a bitch. I can't do this by myself.' It's even harder for Pacey because his dad seems supportive of both Jack and Dawson on the fishing trip and like he would be proud to be their father
    • 2.13 His Leading Lady- Dawson tells Joey he clearly hasn't moved on, and he's trying to hold on like hell to the past when Joey yells at him for making a film about their very private, painful history; Andie tries to push Pacey away but he persists and she relents

    • 2.22 Parental Discretion Advised- Joey puts on a wire to talk to her Dad about his drug dealing and turns him into the police while they are both crying; Dawson told Joey about the drug deal and this exchange happens- Joey: (To Dawson) What I have to say, you're not going to like, so I'll say it quickly. I hope one day that I'll be able to forgive my father for all of this, and I don't know if I'll ever be able to forgive myself, but I know that I will never forgive you. See, Dawson, there are certain circumstances that love can not overcome and from now on... I don't want to know you. Pacey has issues with his father after Andie left him: John Witter: Finally, my boy gets a pair and all it took was getting his heart broken by some girl with a few screws loose. Pacey: (Pacey punches him) Andie did more for my life in six months than you did in 16 years, you rotten, drunkard, son of a bitch! So if you want to make fun of me, if you want to bust on me, that's fine. But if you so much as make one more even slightly disparaging comment about the woman I love, you're going to policing this town from a hospital bed, you understand me? And one more thing, even if Mr. Potter was involved in all this, he's still 10 times the father you ever were; later Andie talks to his dad on the phone and says Pacey is her hero, and his dad comes and hugs him and Pacey cries and says he misses Andie so much while his dad comforts him; Jen didn't run away when the Ice House caught on fire, and Jack asks her why; she says she didn't care enough to run away, but Jack tells her she can't keep pushing everyone away, but he'll be there for her; she cries on his shoulder

He say, "Yeah, You know, you're probably right. I'm sure I don't have any idea what you're going through. How hard it is to let someone go. How painful it must be to know that as right as you two are for each other, it doesn't mean you're right for each other right now. I wouldn't know a thing about that. About how it makes you want to scream, or hit someone... or cry. You know, it’s a new year. Who knows…you and I might even become friends.” She responds, "I'm upset enough already." Joey rests her head on Pacey’s shoulder and begins to cry again (pictured)

    • 3.7 Escape From Witch Island- The only good angst comes when Joey tells Dawson she fears their connection is waning, and they are drifting apart; she doesn't think he loves her anymore, but he tells her, "Hey, once upon a time, you yourself told me that some love stories never end. What happened to that girl?" She responds, "She offered herself to the boy she loved. The boy she thought loved her back. And he rejected her."
    • 3.8 Guess Who's Coming to Dinner- Dawson and Gale discuss whether to keep the secret about Eve being Jen's sister a secret. Finally, Dawson confronts Mrs. Lindley and tells her he knows. She asks him not to tell Jen, but later tells Jen herself, using the fear of this secret being revealed as an excuse for sending Jen away ( it doesn't make any sense, but that's what she says). Jen is very angry at her mother, and this anger somehow makes her want to have sex with Pacey. She finds him and tries to seduce him, but he says he won't sleep with her when she's so angry because that's a bad reason to have sex with him. He tries to console her. Dawson's parents tell him their divorce is final.
    • 3.9 Four to Tango- Pacey and Joey are taking ballroom dancing lessons in hopes of getting a scholarship; Dawson and Jen become suspicious and follow them and keep getting matched up together; During all the mini-conversations, it becomes obvious that Dawson suspects Pacey of sleeping with Joey. Pacey tells him it's not true, but also warns Dawson that he has no right to stop Joey from seeing other people, since she's not his girlfriend anymore. He says, "She's a goddess." Then he tells him to worry about other guys who are going to like her because he should be more worried about people that aren't his best friend. Later, Jen and Pacey find a room and start making out again. This time, there is more passion... but then Dawson and Joey walk in on them! It becomes obvious who Pacey has the lust pact with. Joey gets really indignant and look away, but Dawson is visibly relieved. They both leave. Joey insists sex without love is wrong, period. Dawson says that lonely people just want to be with someone, love or love and it's quite understandable. Jen gets mad at Pacey for telling Joey about their arrangement and figures out that he and Joey must have feelings for each other. They end their pact, which has never amounted to anything, anyway. Pacey says he is disappointed and relieved at the same time. Jen agrees, thanks him and leaves. This is the first ep where Pacey seems interested in Joey based on him calling her a goddess.
    • 3.11 Barefoot at Capefest- Henry sings at the music festival and Jen realizes she shouldn't have passed up a chance to be with him just because he was old; he looks at her meaningfully, but initially doesn't seem receptive to her change of mind
    • 3.12 A Weekend in the Country- Dawson is unhappy about Mitch and Gale impersonating a happy couple. He tells Mitch that he's pissed off about the unclear situation Mitch and Gale have. Mitch says they're trying to be friends, and that he still cares about Gale, whose post-divorce life hasn't been very pleasant. Later, Dawson talks to Gale, who compares her divorce with Dawson/Joey breakup. Grams recalls watching her late husband sleep by the fire all night long, which, as she says, is the sign of true love. Later, Pacey walks into "Bed & Breakfast" and finds Joey asleep on a couch. • 3.13 Northern Lights- Dawson drops out of film class to re-evaluate his life; Joey goes out with A.J. but doesn't feel much when he kisses her;Joey tells Pacey that when she kissed AJ, she realized she was making a big mistake, since she could never feel about AJ... "The way you feel about Dawson," Pacey finishes her thought. Joey corrects him saying, "The way I FELT about Dawson." Pacey tells Joey life is full of surprises-- even after you have loved and lost your love, you can find yourself a new love. Joey suspiciously asks how Pacey knows that, but Pacey doesn't tell her the real reason (oh the joys of unrequited love).
    • 3.14 The Valentine's Day Massacre- Pacey gets mad at Dawson and Joey when they've all been put in jail and complains about the reverence they treat their reverence with; everyone gets bailed out except Pacey; Pacey talks to Doug about how he loves Joey (but doesn't mention her name); he says she's the kind of pretty that gives you butterflies and Doug says, "You know, that's maybe what sucks most about getting older. Somewhere along the line you just lose the butterflies." When he tells Pacey he should go for it, Pacey says, "No, I don't think you're really, properly grasping the gravity of this situation, Dougie. You see, if I was actually to do something about this, there is the strong possibility that the sun would cease to shine. The tides would cease to rise. In fact, I'm betting there's a pretty good chance that the very earth would crack open and Capeside would become home to a huge hellmouth, that would spew forth endless hordes of monsters and demons that would choke the denizens of this city, making them fall to their knees and pray for return to the days before I took action. That's really what we're talking about here." Joey comes to visit Pacey at the end of the episode and says she was worried about him and he needed to learn to read between the banter because she wasn't sure he had people to look out for him like Dawson did (but she would)
    • 3.15 Crime and Punishment Joey paints a mural that gets completely defaced. Joey runs off, and Dawson and Pacey follow. Dawson encourages her to stay calm and objective, while Pacey insists that Joey was singled out for a reason. After Pacey beats up the culprit, Joey tells Dawson that she knows all about Dawson asking Pacey to look after her and that she didn’t appreciate it, mostly because she thinks Pacey’s concern wasn’t genuine. Dawson points out that Pacey has gone to great lengths to show he truly cares for her. Joey decides to re-paint the mural. Pacey is already there, painting over the vandalized wall with white paint so that Joey can start with a clean canvas. He asks Joey if she is ever going to thank him for what he did, but Joey says the only thing she will thank him for is for being himself, and for being there for her throughout the year.
    • 3.17 Cinderella Story- Joey goes to Boston to visit AJ and discovers he has his own Dawson/Joey thing going on with his best friend Morgan when he tell a story inspired by Morgan at a banquet/when Morgan says they kissed once but it was weird; Joey calls Pacey to come get her from Boston because there's no train back to Capeside until the next morning; As Pacey and Joey drive home, Pacey urges her to talk to him about what happened with A.J. since she's crying; she says she's not meant to find true love and they say "Isn't that obvious by now? Pacey: Because you're sixteen and alone.Joey: Because I'm sixteen and in my entire life there's only been two people that have ever really known me. Dawson and...Pacey: This A.J. didn't know you. I don't care how you felt about him. He didn't know you, Joey. Because if he did, he never would have walked away from you.Joey: I was gonna say you, Pacey. Stunned by her comment, Pacey pulls over to the side of the road and asks her to say why she called him, and asks if she's tired of talking and says he doesn't want to talk anymore, and he finally just kisses her.Pacey says this to the child he's mentoring (played by the kid off Jerry McGuire) about Joey: She's so beautiful that when you look at her your knees tremble, your heart melts, and you know, without reservation, that there is order and meaning to the universe.
    • 3.18 Neverland Joey's reaction to the kiss is to push Pacey away and yell at him. He tells her it was just an impulse and after a minor fight Pacey gets in the car. Joey starts walking away and he follows behind her slowly until she gives in but isn't speaking to him. At Jen's, Joey finally tells Jen about the kiss, Jen says that Joey must not think that it was meaningless if it is upsetting her so much; Pacey wants to tell Dawson but he can't because he says he's like a brother he never had (I guess Doug doesn't count?)
    • 3.19 Stolen Kisses- Pacey goes with Dawson and Joey to Dawson's Aunt Gwen's house for Spring Break So many good exchanges in this episode! Joey: Then why did you come here, Pacey?Pacey: You know, for a bright girl, you can be really daft sometimes. Why did you think I came here? I came here to be with you! It's as simple as that. When you like somebody proximity is a good thing, regardless of how they feel about you… or don't. As the case maybe. Joey follows Pacey when he gets upset by the history between Joey and Dawson when they sing Daydream Believer and she says she and Pacey will have their own history. She tells him when he brushed up against her in the bed that morning, she felt it and it made her feel alive:Pacey: Ok. Joey, I'm going to kiss you now.Joey: You can't.Pacey: Jo, you can't say something like that to me and expect me not to kiss you. So that's exactly what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna kiss you in about ten second and if you don't want me to kiss you. Well, if you don't want me to then I guess you're just gonna have to stop me. Ten... Dawson's aunt sees them and says she has to tell Dawson but Joey can't find the words to do it yet; Later he says the following: Pacey: I can't keep kissing you, Joey.Joey: What do you mean?Pacey: I mean just that. *I* can't keep kissing *you.* I've done it twice now. I can't be the one always initiating things. I can't be the one always giving you the answers. Look at me. Joey: I can't. Pacey: Please. If you felt one shred of what I'm feeling for you, we wouldn't be standing here having this conversation. (Starts to walk away)Joey: (Grabs his hand) Pacey...He turns around and she starts kissing him)
    • Joey finally kisses Pacey
    • 3.20 The Longest Day- The entire episode is an angst fest. Jen thinks Pacey's told Dawson about the relationship between himself and Joey. Joey and Pacey argue outside Dawson's house about their relationship. When Dawson confronts Joey and Pacey about their relationship, he says to Will and Andie: "Better yet, ask Joey. Ask her how long she's been lying to me and to you. Go ahead ask them, because I can't stand to look at them. Andie tells Pacey he's stupid because Dawson is Joey's first love, and Joey will just end up hurting him and she berates him for risking his friendship with Dawson; Joey runs after Dawson and they have an argument, Dawson tells her he has to choose between him and Pacey even though she says, Don't make me choose. He asks if she needs Pacey like she needs him. She can't answer. On the boardwalk Joey finds Pacey and they make small talk about his boat (True Love) and then she tells him that it has to be over. He tells her to go as one tear rolls down is cheek, she leaves and when she looks back, he's gone.
    • 3.21 Show Me Love- The boat race takes place, Dawson doesn't let Pacey have room, which is illegal, Dawson's boat "wins" but gets disqualified. Dawson, Pacey and Joey have a fall out, Dawson and Pacey blame each other, Joey tells them she's not worth it, nor an object and they're both idiots. Dawson says Pacey knew that Dawson still loved Joey. Dawson runs after Joey and begs to be in her life, she tells him she just needs a friend and walks away. Later Joey is at her wall that Pacey bought her and Pacey comes up to her, and they speak metaphorically about their relationship.Pacey: If it weren't for Dawson, would you ever love me like that? Like a soulmate? Joey: Pacey, please don't make me do this. Please don't make me choose. He tells her he's going to renew the lease on the wall for her, and leaves. Pacey goes back to his boat and rips the True Love plaque off of it. Andie comes along and picks it up out of the water, and tells him that she doesn't hate him and that he shouldn't give up on True Love.
    • 3.22 The Anti-Prom- Dawson takes Joey to the anti-prom he plans because people won't sell Jack tickets just because he's gay. They go because that was always their plan to go to prom together. Pacey and Joey dance together to Sarah Slean's My Invitation and he tells her that the earrings she's wearing aren't her, but the bracelet that she's wearing is, because it's simple, elegant, beautiful. Joey: It's my mom's bracelet.Pacey: I know.Joey: How do you know?Pacey: Well, because you told me, six months ago. You were wearing that, uh, blue sweater with the snowflakes that you have. We were walking down the hallways at school. I was annoying you as per usual. You said, "Look, Pacey, I just found my mother's bracelet this morning so why don't you cut me some slack?".Joey: You remember that?Pacey: (Whispers) I remember everything. Dawson comes in and looks heartbroken at their closeness as does Andie (who Pacey brought). Andie tells Pacey it's at least nice he got to dance with her. Dawson explodes and asks Joey if she was trying to hurt him. She tells him she was only trying to set an example. He tells her that the whole prom was to get her to see what they used to have and he kisses her, says that's how the night was supposed to end, and walks away. Jack takes Ethan to the prom and tells him he was most uncomfortable with taking someone to the prom that doesn’t feel the same way about him as he does about them. He tells Ethan he’d be ready to kiss him, but in the end he’s not able to and Ethan walks away leaving Jack crying. Andie tells Pacey he'll regret it if he leaves on his boat without fighting for Joey.
    • 3.23 True Love Doug tells Joey that Pacey's leaving; Pacey paints Ask me to stay on her wall; at Dawson's parents remarriage- Joey: I expected you to say good-bye.Pacey: Right. And I walk off, never getting what I came for.At the wedding on the dance floor Joey says she's chosen Dawson- Joey: You're so much of my life, Dawson. I mean, your house is my house and your family is my family and there's not a single significant event I've experienced that you haven't experienced with me and I was so afraid of losing that, but, that wasn't the choice, and if I thought that there was a chance that you would forgive me, I may have chosen differently... and you deserve to know that. Dawson says in his wedding toast he learned from his parents that true love ends and begins again. After that on the dock-Dawson: (To Joey) You want him. You want him like I want you. You love him, like I love you. The only difference is he loves you back, the same way... and you deserve that, ok? And I'm not gonna be the one who stands in the way of you getting that... You're free, you can do whatever you want. Joey runs away and Dawson's left crying on the dock

    • Joey runs up to Pacey's boat-Joey: I think I'm in love with you. Pacey: You think or you know? Joey: I know. I've known since the first time you kissed me and maybe even before. I wanna come with you. Pacey: What? You crazy? Joey: Mmm-mm, I wanna stop standing still. I wanna move forward. I wanna come with you. Pacey: What about Bessie and the B&B? They need you. Joey: Not as much as I need you Pacey. They go off into the sunset together (literally) Jack goes to kiss Ethan, who unfortunately got back together with his ex and has this conversation with his father-Jack: I spent an entire year developing this relationship. And working on it. Now it's a wash. The whole year's a wash. My whole life is a wash.Mr. McPhee: Your life is not a wash. You hurt now because you had the guts to put yourself out there. To go after what you wanted. Jack: I can't... (Squatting to the floor and leaning against the kitchen cabinet) I can't keep going through this. It's like having all the problems of a typical teenager and then there's this whole other level of constant fear and pain. Do you know the anguish I went through over a kiss? One stupid little kiss. Most people don't have to do that. Mr. McPhee: You're right. They don't. Jack: Then why me? I don't want to be different. I didn't ask to be gay. Mr. McPhee: No more than I asked for a gay son. But, boy, am I glad that I got one. Jack: You don't mean that. Mr. McPhee: Yeah, I do. (Goes to Jack and hugs him)(Jack cries); Jen goes to tell Henry she loves him too and chases down his bus that was going to football camp and says in having serious relationships she's just as much of a virgin as him (the team laughs, but Henry doesn't really care and they kiss); Jen, Andie, and Jack go to visit Dawson and try to comfort him even though he says he wants to be alone.
