- when she was a kid, henry james, george henry lewes, and james russell lowell used to CHILL AT HER HOUSE.
- her mom died when she was thirteen and when her dad died less than 10 years later it lead to a pretty severe mental breakdown for which she was institutionalized
- she was also sexually abused by 2 of her half brothers
- she's kind of known for dealing with mental issues - depression, mood swings, etc.
- her sister married some dude and they both loved avant-garde art which influenced woolf's writing
- also woolf used to flirt with this dude and it pissed her sister off
- she married a writer named leonard woolf
- she called him a penniless jew, but she really did love him
- they started Hogarth Press together
- published her books
- and some works by ts eliot, laurens van der post, etc.
- also commissioned works by artists (including her sister)
- in her works, she experimented with stream-of-consciousness, underlying psychological, + emotional motives of characters
- she put rocks in her coat and drowned herself after an intense bout of depression
- that shit's really sad
- so is her suicide note
- she seems so confused + doesn't want to burden her husband
- she explored some really interesting themes in relation to female writers + the position of females
- “A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.”
- she also had some bisexual/lesbian tendencies
- including torrid affairs with females
- nicole kidman played her in a movie and won an oscar for it, so you know, cheers all around.
