- her signature scent is a powder called "estee"
- she has a song for everything- we'll be in the middle of some topic and she'll start singing a song that relates to it (we never know the songs because they're so old but it's still really cute)
- she has this great garden with morning glories, white stones from North Carolina, a tire swing, a fire pit, a bird bath, patio furniture (complete with a happy yellow umbrella) and this nifty stand that holds sugar water for hummingbirds (she tried for years to attract hummingbirds but they only started coming this summer- she is very happy about it)
- she loves to read- she has read most popular fiction [and the classics of course]
- for years, she was a scribe for vestry meetings at her church. Now she and my grandpa are only in charge of the offertory during the sunday service
- she grew up in Iliad, NY and one year, she was actually crowned Miss Iliad in a pageant
- she has a sister named Gwen, as she often reminds me because I have a friend named Gwen
- being an excellent singer, she was asked by many of her friends to sing at their weddings when she was a young woman. many of her friends are catholic and so she bought a perry como record to teach herself ave maria and the lord's prayer.
- she makes the best peanut butter and jelly- with her homemade strawberry jam, and cuts them into triangles.
- speaking of food, her kitchen table is ALWAYS set with the following things: an assortment of nuts, a bowl of fruit, pretzel sticks and cheese, goldfish and a vase of fresh flowers
- she was married once before she met my grandpa- apparently he was verbally abusive and cheated on her with a woman in their neighborhood
- she says that dr. saab (who is also my chiropractor) "saved her life" many years ago by fixing her up so she could walk again
- she goes to the post office almost every day, because she has so many friends that she send letters and birthday cards to
- before moving into the house in west bloomfield, there was a japanese family that lived there, with whom they still exchange correspondence. As a gift, the japanese family gave my grandma a china doll and my grandma chose to name her after their daughter, Meyumi. Meyumi was just married this past year and she has a baby already.
- her bedroom has a mirror on the ceiling, a big wicker chair, and prayers framed up on the walls
- her typical outfit consists of capri pants, a cotton t-shirt and comfy loafers- all usually in pastel colors.
- outside on her deck she keeps a pair of white boots with red trim and puts fake flowers in them
- she uses an artificial christmas tree, upon which always hangs the christmas pickle that we play "hid the pickle" with, and an ornament belonging to her grandmother: it is actually a light from her grandmother's tree, ridged like a pinecone and with a santa face. under this tree, she always puts the grandkids presents: annually we each receive an ornament and a twenty dollar bill.
- random knick knacks one would find about her house include: a spoon collection, her fancy italian umbrella, little cat figurines, glass light catchers that make rainbows on the carpet, a little wood tree on the wall that has little pegs with faces to represent her grand-kids, an old orb-like lamp with roses etched on it, an impressionistic painting of a woman and her son walking through a field of flowers, the cat-collage panel we worked on as kids, a metal dollhouse and a really big magnifying glass
- her eyes are very precarious- she has to have a lot of adjustments to her lenses so she can see at all, and even then she has trouble
- she has a condominium down in north carolina (with an ocean view) and goes down there at least 4 or 5 times a year. we used to have our family reunions down there.
- she loves cats (maybe not to the extreme that bridget does) and collects cat calendars and cat memorabilia
- she likes her hair blonde and only blonde- recently she dyed it darker on accident and hated the color (though I really liked it!)
- back in the day, she was a secretary for the athletic office at DCD and that's how she met my dad and that's how my dad met my mom
- for birthdays, even when it's not your birthday, and it's your sister's or something, she still gives you a "sister present" for the occasion- usually like a notepad with your initial on it or a beanie baby or some useful stationary thing, like sharp scissors
