"A while ago, one night, Colin had eaten the universe, and from then on had felt black and spacey inside, had felt his heart, tiny and untwinkling, in some far away center, white and tepid as a dot of Styrofoam."

  • I have been using it for about a month. Right now, I am just uploading photos from the PEN and the iPhone, and uploading all other cameras into other accounts. I think it helps to re-visit certain kinds of photos, by not having the bulkiness and just living with the 17mm lens. That is the "intangible" part of it. As for the auto-focus, yes, it is very slow, even in bright light situations. (The reason is that it scans the entire focal range from one end the other.) This is not a problem for me at all. Although the camera is a 2x crop over the APS-C sensor size (just like the original PEN was over the 35mm film negative), this turns into a plus for a longer DoF and if you do ƒ8 and manual focus, then it should be fast enough for most scenes once you get accustomed to manual focus(*) To make life easy with this focusing problem would just require that you change the shutter button so that it does an Exposure measure when you press it halfway, and not an auto focus. I use the AEL/AFL button in the back for focusing, and then the half-press of the shutter button to measure exposure. I do this with the dSLR because it just makes life easier in general. However, some people may have to adjust. I heartily recommended for various aspects of photography, one of them is to take more shots for which one may be discouraged by having to change primes, lug a bigger and heavier bag, and yet want a high quality photo — it works really nice to 1600 ISO so far for me. I have not gotten any other lenses, and probably may never move away from the 17mm (a 34mm equivalent) for the time being. It is very suitable for many of the shots that are in the vein of "quite useless."
  • I've had the Pen for about 7 weeks now and the low light capability is pretty nice, and you can put some fast older lenses on it. AF is slow in low light, though. The 17mm f/2.8 is small and fairly fast. AF has worked for me in other dark situations with it. It would be my first choice for this kit...the high ISO performance is probably the best of any 4/3 sensor to date, and is getting close to APS-C territory. Certainly much better than any of the super P&S cameras out there. I gave my G9 to my wife after one weekend of using the Pen.
