• there's this really interesting juxtaposition between the ideals of the 'hard science fiction' genre, and the realities of some of its early works, wherein a story will become very clearly 'dated' as the scientific concepts that make up fundamental parts of it are disproven or otherwise expanded upon following the real-world exploration of its applicable field
  • for example robert heinlein's 1951 novel 'between planets' largely takes place on the colonial planet venus, which is portrayed as habitable by humans since its extreme surface temperature and pressure were yet to be discovered (the first venerian expedition to return useful data didn't occur until 1965)
