P BLAIR MOUTHS
- Have a variance of mouth shapes so they don't clap. If it's drastic, it can pop/stroke, but can be used in accordance to modulance.
- inflexion = ?
ANIMATION LAYOUT - Design = Differences
- If you make everything symmetrical, it's not visually interesting.
- Lawrence of Aravia has hyper conscious visual design.
- Draw background around character!
- Know where character is first.
- If interacting with object (static), pose character first.
- Include camera movement ("the field")
- Establishing shots = Answering questions viewers have.
- Keep values simple & clear.
- Don't have similar values close to main character in the composition.
- Panning Shot
- Can do with organic shapes. You can visually get the eye movement.
- Simple, undulating shapes are good for long runs or walks.
- Vertical, horizontal, diagonal pans.
FIlM BOARDING with Steve Hickner
- Be mindful of aspect ratios. Animation usually deals with around 1.85.
- Rather than thirds, think of the Golden Egg.
- Don't put camera frame on joints!!
- Spielberg - "Know the horizon lines."
- Eye Trace = Collection of images.
- Crucial; faster cut, better succession needs to be on z-axis.
- Hickner: Best action directors > Spielberg, James Cameron.
- Close-up & cuts = Cherish & keep rare.
- Diagonals = Sexy & dynamic.
- Highest point of contrast should be focus.
- Cutting without cutting - "Mother". You can move camera & lower volume, preserves cut for when woman looks down.
- Reaction shot = how the audience should be feeling.
- Hitchcock = "Audience must know everything to create suspense."
- A Cam = Talking directly, B Ca = talking away
- Move camera with moving character.
- Geography - show a shot of distance between A & B subjects.
- Drop camera to make a simple object your foreground element.
- (Pumpkin or character around same size but farther away from audience.)
- Tone your boards!!
PIXAR DAY
- gilpi? ipi?
- Why do people watch movies?
- All about Character not Story.
- Where do character come from?
- Mind & body - shows specific character.
- Unique, speciic, identifiable, relatable.
- How do you show character? Contrast (evident), Change over Time (seeing inside characters head, good acting.)
- Consistency, psych & physiological, impacts behavior and actions, multiple expressions
- Personality! Consisten behavior. Character defined by story.
