Tall trees, native to Chile and Argentina. Leaves which are found spirally inserted into all shoots except the trunk are sharp, broad triangles (1to 3cm wide and 3-4cm long). Seed cones spherical near the ends of branches and covered in spines that burst to release a seed.

Moderately sized slender trees with unique fan shaped foliage, sometimes cordate but never fully split with veins running through the leaves without forming a network. Deciduous, and diocious with female trees bearing fleshy fruit like coverings for seeds. Male trees have swimming sperm, fertilization occurs at ovules borne in pairs at the end of stalks.
