Fionn is from the Old Irish finn meaning "white, blessed". The legend of Fionn Mac Cumhaill comes to mind immediately.
In the legend, Fionn Mac Cumhaill's father, Cumhaill, was killed by Goll mac Morna. As a result, Fionn was raised up in secret by a wise woman. He later is tasked with cooking the Salmon of Knowledge and when he accidentally tasted a drop of it's fat, he was granted all of the knowledge in the world. After gaining this knowledge, he became the leader of the Fianna, elite warriors who protected Ireland and served the king. According to some versions of the story, his life ends tragically at the hands of Goll Mac Morna who had long sought to overthrow him. Though some also believe that Fionn Mac Cumhaill actually fell into a long sleep and will reawaken when Ireland needs him most.
