Blair is a Scottish surname derived from the Gaelic blár meaning "plain, field, meadow, battlefield". Though, some will say it means something to the effect of "from the plain" or "dweller on the plain".

For a girl, Blair feels modern and clean (read: preppy) but there is just a hint of earthiness to it.

For a boy, it feels a bit more "country", like the name of a farmer or someone who works the earth in some manner. I think the meaning of the name is a bit more in line with my thoughts on it here.
