Holly is ultimately from the Old English holen meaning, of course, "holly". The plants are thought to possess protective qualities and would be planted near the entrance of houses to prevent the entry of malevolent spirits while welcoming helpful spirits. It is also thought to bring in good luck and protect homes from lighting strikes. Wreaths fashioned from holly leaves was given to newlyweds in a Roman tradition. Newborn babies were sometimes bathed with water infused with holly to protect them.
