Iris is a name meaning "rainbow" in Greek. Iris was also the goddess of the rainbow and served as a messenger of the Gods—especially Hera. It was thought that the appearance of a rainbow was the descent of a celestial messenger.

This meaning is secondary to me as I think first of beautiful white and yellow iris flowers.
