Linden is from linta, an Old High German word meaning “linden tree”. In Baltic mythology, a linden tree is the sacred tree of the Goddess of Fate, Laima. Because of this, some Lithuanian women were said to worship the tree for good luck and fertility. It also holds a special place in German mythology as it was said that you cannot possibly tell a lie under the shade of a linden tree.
