Rosemary is from the herb, whose name is from the Latin ros marinus meaning "dew of the sea". It came into use in the 19th century.
Symbolically, Rosemary has a few meanings: love, fertility, remembrance, and memory. In Europe, rosemary is a symbol of love and fertility used in baptismal meals, bridal wreaths, and bouquets. The ancient Greeks dedicated rosemary to the goddess Aphrodite and brides wore rosemary crowns as a symbol of love and fidelity. Rosemary as an emblem of remembrance and fidelity has also been found in literature and in Australia sprigs of rosemary are worn on Anzac Day or Remembrance day in the same way that poppies are worn on Memorial Day in the United States. Finally, the Romans believed that rosemary strengthened the memory and it was worn while studying.
