- J: My first ever boyfriend whom I started dating in eighth grade. My parents joked that he looked like John Lennon. He had fine, stringy hair that at a certain length curled at the ends. He also had glasses and without them, his eyes looked so small, like they were shrinking and bound to disappear. He was a drummer and asked me to go to his drumming recital. I sat front row as he played along to "Frantic" by Metallica. We were barely thirteen. I lost my virginity to him next to a foosball table on my basement floor. He broke up with me over the phone while he was at Disney World.
- C1: My first high school boyfriend. No one particularly liked him and he hung out with the stoner punk kids. His favorite band was the Misfits so I had to listen to them constantly. He played Halo for hours while I laid on his bed watching. We had sex behind his house in the woods, just far enough away to see his porch. I found pieces of leaves in my underwear after. He broke up with me to date a prettier, blonde sophomore. We hooked up again after high school but he was so high we just decided to talk instead.
- C2: My high school sweetheart and first love. We met in high school band class. He played the trumpet. He was a skateboarder, surfer, and a beach lifeguard. He was voted homecoming king. I would have done absolutely anything for him. We fought constantly about nothing and had regular screaming matches. He bought me a diamond promise ring but cheated on me throughout our relationship. His parents hated me and my parents hated him. He dumped me after three years of dating when he graduated high school.
- D1: My best friend turned boyfriend after C2. He played on our high school football team. We had been close friends for five years when we started dating. He took me to senior prom. I hated every moment of it; it felt like I was dating my brother. We were on again and off again for a couple of years but in the end we broke up and never spoke again. I texted him a couple of months ago and he still had the same number. He asked me to see a picture of my breasts. I blocked him.
- C3: I met him at a hookah bar downtown. He was there with his Navy buddies and he had a military haircut. He was ten years older than me and it was apparent in the topics he talked about: politics, foreign affairs, etc. I found him boring at first but his maturity attracted me. I went out with him on a date to a cheap pizza place. I stared at the TV mounted in the corner while he talked about politics. He deployed to Afghanistan and I talked to him once a week via his satellite phone. When he got back he was verbally and emotionally abusive so I dumped him.
- D2: I met him on Okcupid during my senior year of college. We met at a bar for our first date and I paid for all of his drinks. We slept together at my place. He cooked dinners for me which I found lavish and sweet. He had a best friend who was a woman but they were unusually close which made me very jealous. I had an emotional breakdown at his house one time. He broke up with me through text while I was in a TJ Maxx. He said I was crazy. I almost dropped out of college I was so heartbroken.
- T: I met him also on okcupid. He lived in another state so we met in the middle between our states. He was very, very tall and kind of goofy and innocent. We got serious and I moved to be with him. We moved in together eventually and got engaged. We started fighting a lot about money and then I broke it off. He moved out but we agreed to stay friends. We still hangout regularly.
