"AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Extravagant wigs became fashionable for a while in 18th-century England. They could soar as high as four feet above a woman's head. Collections of fruit might be arrayed in the mass of hair, along with small replicas of gardens, taxidermically stuffed birds, and model ships. I would love to see you...

  • Just when you think you can't stand to hear another Christmas carol, here I come with a holiday treat that will make you actually appreciate the insanity of the Yuletide season. Wrap this CD as a gift to yourself, pretend you forgot what it is and act surprised when you open it. Close your eyes and imagine you're with me at my house Christmas morning listening to favorite carols.
  • What better music to open your Xmas stocking with than "Fat Daddy"?! Fat Daddy, Baltimore's one-time coolest rhythm and blues disc jockey, host of "Negro Day" on "The Buddy Deane Show," and my inspiration for the Motor Mouth Maybelle character in "Hairspray." He never sounded so lovely, so cheery, so ripe to be asked over for eggnog. Maybe Tiny Tim could join us. No Mrs. Miller, this eccentric but brilliant performer may have been a novelty act in...

  • Begin with a blank book (or a 3-ring binder, if you want to add/subtract/rearrange rituals)
  • Write any rituals, spells, invocations, and magical information that you have either composed or found elsewhere and would like to preserve
  • All Books of Shadows are suggestions as to ritual, not "holy writ"--never feel tied down to these words.
  • It is a good idea to copy your spells and rites by hand. Be sure your copies are legible by flickering firelight.

Music and dance

  • Less intellectual rituals can be more effective precisely because they bypass the conscious mind and speak to the deep consciousness, the psychic awareness.
  • If you find your rites stuffy and unsatis...

  • Ritual in a way is an anti-machine, even though the industrial world is not totally devoid of the practice of ritual.
    • It is not possible...to associate the hasty, grinding wheels of the machine culture as the echoes or soundings of ritual. /Ritual is not compatible with the rapid rhythm that industrialism has injected into life./ So whenever ritual happens in a place commanded by or dominated by a machine, ritual becomes a statement against the very rhythm that feeds the needs of that machine.
  • Those serving the culture don't have the option to slow down and address the issue of what to do with their own needs, or how to get in touch with their own unexpressed powers. For they are too caught up in the speed and motion that is required by the Machine to feed its overt power. Bu...
