  • recommend snorkelling out from Fruits of Rarotonga. * great coffee and pastries at LBV, there are 2, one in Muri & one in town, we prefer Muri as they have a sandpit and play area for kids.
  • Capitan Tamas glass bottom boat is well worth the money, great for kids too.
  • And my pick for island nights would be Te Vara Nui or Highland paradise, pricey but I think it's money well spent.
  • Live music and pizza night, Thursday's at Castaway in Arorangi, and you'll see the most stunning sunset there.

Hikes: 'If someone could only do one short hike at the Canyon, I'd have to suggest the

  • Kaibab Trail to Cedar Ridge (3 miles total roundtrip)
  • Skeleton Point (6 miles total)
  • Grandview Trail to the first overlook (about 2.5 miles roundtrip, but a much more rugged trail). (Expansive views for a short hike)

For someone doing a more ambitious trek:

  • Bright Angel Trail to Plateau Point (12 miles total). The Bright Angel is less spectacular than the Kaibab in its upper reaches, but for a longer hike it has more diversity and this trek ends at a truly great overlook of the Colorado River.

For someone who is an experienced hiker and wanted a taste of the backcountry:

  • Start your explorations of the Muir Woods at the Visitor Center, with an excellent model of the Muir Woods valley, and a small diorama of redwoods. There’s also a café with good selection of sandwiches, salads, drinks and snacks.
  • The Main Trail follows along Redwood Creek, a clear sparkling fern-lined stream that’s home to coho and steelhead salmon (no fishing, these lovely fish are endangered). Along with the towering redwoods, look for sword ferns, lady ferns, and moss on the forest floor. The trail is a wide boardwalk so it’s easy with strollers, and open year round.
  • From the visitor center, go up the trail to the first bridge. Check out the huge cross section of a redwood from 960 AD. The self-guided nature trail begins at the ...

  • Yasika Adventures or Outback Safari are recommended. The Cordillera Septentrional mountains, near Cabarete, are good for those who like their nature with a side of adrenalin.
  • The best known of these is probably Playa Grande, just 15km east of the town of Río San Juan. This is undoubtedly one of the country's most beautiful beaches - long, broad and tawny, with the aquamarine sea on one side and a thick fringe of palm trees on the other. Stark white cliffs jut out in the distance. It's the perfect setting for swimming, surfing or lazing.
