  • May 2017, after meeting a friend of Emily's, Michael Simmons, at U.D. Emily told me that Michael Simmons says that everyone should be able to identify the greatest pieces of classical music when they hear it. I guess which pieces are the greatest are subject to individual opinion. I have decided to begin reading about pieces of music and the composers, and listening to the pieces. I will keep track of the pieces that are my favorites. The goal is to get a list of 100 eventually.
  • 05/27/2017 I listened to some Claude Debussy (1862-1918) and Max Bruch (1838-1920 and maybe a few others. Here are the titles of some books I checked out of the library: The Classical Music Experience by Julius H. Jacobson II, M.D., copyright 2003; The Rough Guide to Classical Music, an A-Z of Composers, Key Works and Top Recordings, 5th ed., by Jonathan Buckley etal, Joe Staines, editor. copyright 2010; The Complete Classical Music Guide, a Dorling Kindersley book copyright 2012. Each book had something to offer. The call number for two of the books was 780.9 and one of the books was 781.68.
  • 2)Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 23
  • 3)Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67
  • 4)Sergey Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 18. This is Maria's favorite.
  • 5)The tune from the Finlandia Hymn by Jean Sibelius is very beautiful. There are some Christian lyrics written for it, i.e., Be Still My Soul, that are very beautiful with this tune. I need to find out the full name of the symphony piece and also the years of Sibelius' life.
  • 6)Debussy Clair de Lune
  • 7)Anton Bruckner Symphony No. 8 in C Minor 1892 Austrian. I was listening to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhVkzcCL0SA and this person's choice for #87 was this piece. Each of the 100 pieces only had a few seconds on the youtube recording. I liked what I heard for Bruckner's Symphony No. 8. I think what I heard was in the 3rd or 4th movement. I want to listen to this piece a little more closely and also listen to the 100 Best Pieces of Classical Music again to get more ideas of pieces to listen to.
  • 8)Bedrich Smetana, The Moldau
  • 9)Beethoven's Ninth Symphony Second Movement (lots of kettle drums) I want to listen to this entire symphony sometime and study it more. It is considered #1 classical piece by some. Beethoven was almost completely deaf when he wrote this symphony. There is choral music in the fourth (last) movement.
