Wild Bird Sanctuary on Midland. September 4, 2020

  • Got there at 4 pm, Anna introduced me to Darby (?). We worked in the main bird room where there's at least 10-15 cages (only about 8 are used though).
  • I got to feed and 'water' a fledgling robin, some carolina wrens, a king bird, and some spunky teenage cardinals. I really liked the robin, he/she was a cutie (now named xavier claudia jordan khalil betsy. that's it's full name, named by me)
  • We fed them some chopped up berries, mealworms, and some cat/bird food. Ironic that we feed them cat food now that I think about it... We use forceps for the food (pointy part down!) and a little paintbrush to give them some water. It was really tough to feed them lol. Kept on dropping them, especially the mealworms.
  • The king bird was sending very mixed signals. I would try to feed it and it would only open its mouth for a few milliseconds at a time. So it was like an awkward little dance but the food almost always ended up on the cage floor >_< Anna took care of him haha
  • Then we would take the top layer of newspaper and carefully fold it up and put in the trash. That way it's pretty easy to clean the cages. Then we take the little containers that held the food and clean them out with water and a little soap. Then Anna told me to put it in a basin of bleach solution.
  • After about 40 minutes.... I WAS SO TIRED. OMG.
  • I told Anna I wanted to stay until the next feeding time at 5, so I ended up staying until then. So I made it about 1 1/2 hours so it's nice to know what my limits are right now (not very long though smh... oh well. Keep on working on it.)
  • This is kinda an experiment to see what I'll be able to handle in terms of volunteering and eventually a job.
  • It seems like it might e a while before I'm well enough to actually get a job... *sigh*...
  • But it was helpful to be able to sit down while I was feeding the birds. That helped me keep going for the last 30 minutes or so.
  • ..them birds are cute.
