  • at some point people will spread lies about you. when this happens, the worst thing to do is spread them back. be the bigger person and keep in mind that people who believe the lies aren't worth talking to anyway
  • don't put off breaking up when you know you want to; prolonging the situation only makes it worse. tell them honestly, simply, kindly but firmly. don't make a big production, don't make up an elaborate story; this will help you avoid a big tear-jerking scene. if you want to date other people, say so. be prepared for the boy to feel hurt and rejected. even if you've gone together for only a short time and haven't been too serious there's still a feeling of rejection when someone says she prefers the company of others to your exclusive company but if you're honest and direct and avoid making a flowery emotional speech when you break the news the boy'll respect you for your frankness and honestly, he'll appreciate the kind, straight-forward manner in which you told him your decision. unless he's a real jerk or cry-baby, you'll be friends
  • even when someone wants you too be 100 percent honest with them, you have to lie a little because sometimes the truth doesn't change anything, it just hurts the person
  • everyone has to have someone they can cry with and empty their hearts to. if it's your mother, your partner, your best friend or a stranger, it doesn't matter, it's a better therapy than you could ever pay for
  • for their intolerance, pity those who hate you; for your tolerance, don't hate them back
  • love brings extremes to your life; extreme bliss and extreme pain. you just have to hope that the former outweighs the latter
  • perspective is a difficult thing to find in depression. you will eventually find yourself feeling like nobody else in the world could possibly be feeling as bad as you. and then when you get better, a few months down the line, you'll feel guilty about thinking that way.
  • the greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return
  • the people who seem most confident are actually the most insecure
  • the right song at the right moment can change everything, this shows the power of music
  • the things that happen to you that should be life changing, such as sitting with a friend and holding his hand as his life is ending or running away to live in paris on your own when you're sixteen or climbing kilimanjaro or falling in love, often make no difference to you as a person. it's the mundane moments that are far more likely to change your life. it'll hit you when you're cleaning your bathroom or as you're queuing in a shop
  • there is not just one person for everyone
  • there's a difference between being 'alone' and being 'lonely'. but both can be good for you every so often
  • things always seem worse at night so try not to be rash and wait until the morning before taking action
  • we will never grow out of disney films
  • whatever your preconceptions, you're probably wrong
  • you'll go through phases and try to be someone else but sometime, hopefully not too late, you'll suddenly realise that you are you and it'll make you smile
