Goyle woke up in the middle of the night and told the doctor that he had suddenly stopped breathing, and then fell back asleep. Goyle also felt very tired the next day, even though he spent the same number of hours sleeping as the other patients. Goyle has sleep apnea. This would affect his state of consciousness because he would never fully go to rest as a result of unconsciously waking himself up. To fix this, Goyle should either lose weight, because he gained twenty pounds over the holidays eating chocolate frogs, or he can be prescribed sleeping pills.
Harry reported having a horrible dream about dying over and over again. In the sleep ward, he woke up and his blankets were all over the floor, his pillow was at the opposite end of the bed, and his friend Hermione, who was watching over him, told the doctor that he was screaming spells in his sleep. The doctors told Harry he was having night terrors. They affect Harry’s state of consciousness because he is having hallucinations in his sleep, but he is active at the same time. Harry says that he needs his sleep in order to defeat He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named and his night terrors kind of freak Hermione out, so the doctor prescribes him some pills.
Draco Malfoy is an avid cocaine addict. Ever since he did not have the guts to kill Dumbledore and Snape had to do it for him, he lost confidence in himself. Crabbe and Goyle told him that cocaine would give him confidence, so he got some from his Death Eater friends. Not only does cocaine increase Malfoy’s confidence, but it makes him more optimistic that the Dark Lord will defeat Harry and that Malfoy won’t be sent to Azkaban because he’s a Death Eater. Although when Bellatrix noticed that Malfoy seemed more paranoid and nauseous (his Death Eater drug dealer was sent to Azkaban) she guessed he was using cocaine and told the psychiatrist to keep a close eye on him. Because he was having withdrawal syndromes, the drug affected his state of consciousness by causing him to have hallucinations about flying on hippogriffs. The doctor gave him small doses to slowly wean him off of the drug. Malfoy is now in the Azkaban psychiatry ward.
No one knew, but Ginny was so trusting of Tom Riddle’s diary because she was taking ecstasy and thought everyone was her friend. Her mouth was often dry and went to Moaning Myrtle’s bathroom in the middle of the night to simply get a drink of water when the Chamber of Secrets was opened. When Dumbledore noticed Ginny’s jaw muscle was having spasms, he knew right away that she was on cocaine because of his history in hard core drugs. He immediately sent her to this psychiatry ward where the doctors could watch her. The drug affected her state of consciousness and caused a hallucination that Harry had died, but the doctors calmed her down by telling her that he was in a room down the hall with night terrors.
Everyone thought Ron ate all the time because he was just a pig, but it was really because he was smoking marijuana. Ron got his weed from Fred and George who told him it would make Hermione like him. Ron often felt very relaxed and carefree. This affected his state of consciousness because he wasn’t his normal self but a lot more relaxed. Although, when Ron was wearing the horcrux, the happy effects of the pot were counteracted by the irritability that came with wearing the necklace. Ron was always asking about food because he had “munchies,” a side effect of smoking marijuana. When Ron disappeared, he actually came the psychiatrist and was taken off pot and told that Hermione would like him more if he wasn’t so complainy and didn’t eat as much.
