‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ 一 a Modern American Classic

  • ‘Breakfast at Tiffany's’ grabbed my attention right from the start. The novella by Truman Capote opens with an intriguing mystery about how the protagonist, Holly Golightly, may have travelled to Africa, which is quite different to the film!
  • The book is narrated by an unnamed male writer and is set in Manhattan in the 1940s. He's fascinated by Holly, who lives downstairs. She's a society girl who is devoted to her brother Fred, and makes her living by convincing rich men to give her money.
  • What I enjoyed the most is that the characters are believable. It's not difficult to imagine a lonely young man trying to help the beautiful young girl who is a tenant in the apartment downstairs. It's more challenging to relate to Holly but the hints Truman drops about her troubled past help explain her behaviour.
  • To sum up, I'd definitely recommend reading 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' to older readers. Particularly if they've seen the film. As for younger readers, I'd recommend it to teenagers but I don't think the content is appropriate for anyone younger.

A review: Write and Improve

A well-known magazine for English language learners has asked for reviews from readers about useful resources for learning English.

You have recently discovered Write and Improve, a new writing tool for learners of English. Write a review for the magazine describing the main features of the tool and why it is/isn’t helpful. Include details about what you like about the tool and about any difficulties you had with it, and finish by giving your recommendation for other readers.

  • Write and Improve grabbed my attention right from the start. Basically, the tool offer writing proposals and you can send them and ask for a correction. One of the most interesting features of the website include: the workbooks divided by levels from beginner to advanced, a task timer to time your writing and a tracker to see your progress throughout the time.
  • Unlike the other resources that I’ve used, their feedback is really accurate and stringent, just as the exam’s correction, moreover, it’s really helpful for self-taught students who don’t have access to english teachers.
  • What I enjoyed the most is the fact that you can truly follow your progress owing to the trackers and, consequently, see clearly what you must improve: if it’s grammar, vocabulary or even structure. Since the website’s layout is really clean and right to the point – you find anything you need – I’ve had no difficulties using it.
  • To sum up, I’d definitely recommend using Write and Improve for english learners in general, from all levels, because you can learn properly how to write texts. As for students preparing themselves for Cambridge’s exams, such as IELTS or FCE, I’d recommend it too, since the site has a test zone with some past exams.
