Petra is from the Greek Πέτρος (Petros) meaning "stone, rock". It was adopted in the late nineteenth century as a feminine version of Peter. This is likely due to the ancient city of Petra being rediscovered in 1812. It was described by the poet John William Burgon as "a rose-red city, half as old as time" and UNESCO has described Petra as "one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage".
I am also quite into the song Petra by Weston Estate at the moment.
