Konrad Lorenz studied imprinting in geese
- He took two groups of goose eggs
- Group 1 were hatched by their mothers, group two were hatched in an incubator without a mother
- The newborn geese in group 1 first saw their mother, and therefore followed their mother
- The newborn geese in group 2 first saw Lorenz, so they followed him
- The newborn geese formed an attachment to the first moving object that they saw, which helps them to recognise their mother
IMPRINTING IS BOTH INNATE AND LEARNED
