• when you're photographing a city, you'll probably be carrying your gear, so leave the things you won't need at the hotel. here are some things to be sure you have with you:
    • a good zoom lens for flexibility
    • a tripod, even a small one, can be very helpful in the early morning or the evening
    • a map of the city
    • as little gear as you really need— don't be a target for thieves
    • a diffuser for your flash
  • you'll need to look up to shoot the tall buildings, get close to capture the people, and think about motion to record the hustle and bustle. light is the essence of photography, and even in a city, look for that first. whether it's a sunrise peeking through tall buildings, a street lamp illuminating a small spot on a foggy day, or the neon signs beckoning customers—think light!
  • cities are big, and you're often best off seeing them by foot, but if you don't have the time to take a walking tour on your own, sign up for a tour that will take you to the highlights. look for one that lets you get out of the bus or van. you may not have all the time you want at each location, but it's better than not being there at all.
