- do triple-check everything for accuracy. word-processing programs make perfect words. they can't recognize when "that" should be "hat."
- don't bind manuscripts when submitting them to agents, publishers, or editors. it's unnecessary and expensive to place the manuscript in a folder. if you have a fat manuscript, use a folding clip to secure the top.
- do give your manuscript style. make it clean, neat, and well-written. get it to the editor on time.
- don't duplicate your manuscript on fancy paper, but do use at least 20-pound bond. tear off tractor-feeder edges if you use continuous paper.
- do include your name, address, e-mail address, and phone number on the first page of the manuscript. it's normally on the upper right side.
- do double-space your manuscript. use a font that's easy to read but not oversized. italics, extra-fancy, and oversize fonts are not appropriate for manuscript submission. using them may lead to rejection of even the most brilliant work.
- do use a font that allows you to put 200 to 240 words on each page.
- don't leave extra lines between paragraphs.
- do indent paragraphs five spaces.
- don't justify your right margin as this changes the word count on the page.
- do leave about 3 to 4 inches at the top of each page as you begin each chapter.
- don't cheat on margins. make margins all around the page about 1 inch. if you've received another directive from your editor on layout, by all means, follow that.
