⠀ ⠀ ┊ january:

    • juno ⋅ ★★☆☆☆ ⋅ contains some good moments and i liked the feel it was trying to create; had charming points but the writing was trying too hard to sound cool and 'teen', really ruined it for me. it's not that bad but not that good either.
    • tuesdays with morrie ⋅ ★★★☆☆ ⋅ yes, i cried, and morrie says that's okay. good characters and compelling relationships, nice emphasis on emotional moments, however it has a hallmark movie feel to it that was understandably drummed up and was not quite as present in the source material.

⠀ ⠀ ┊ may:

    • the road to el dorado ⋅ ★★★☆☆ ⋅ absolute classic, one of the most underrated disney movies. some parts fell a bit flat for me but i think it's a great movie for kids.
    • forrest gump ⋅ ★★★½☆ ⋅ stupid but good.. it's obvious that it was created to evoke sentimentality but it is executed in such a way that makes the movie genuinely charming. its ridiculous and comedic parts are what make this movie whole even with some shortcomings.
    • schindler's list ⋅ ★★★★½ ⋅ thoughtful in both its themes and technical aspects, brilliant cinematography to deliver a theme, and the message speaks for itself. it is real, horrifying, and important.
    • the taming of the shrew ⋅ judging as an adaptation it's well done, though the story itself has overtones that make it difficult to deeply enjoy, though true to the time. it's a bit boring but it is a righteous adaptation. great costuming (kate's wedding dress is gorgeous) and i enjoyed the theatrical style of acting, considering its origins. elizabeth taylor is wonderful!! and we hate petruchio very much. ending is a disappointment through and through.

⠀ ⠀ ┊ june:

    • don quixote ⋅ ★★☆☆☆ ⋅ a rather dry adaptation of what could have been transformed into an epic and funny story.
    • 42 ⋅ enlightening, honorable tribute to jackie, great direction and fantastic acting by the whole cast, especially boseman. without saying a word, the pain in his expression was palpable and delivered so much feeling, even in moments without dialogue.
    • el orfanato ⋅ i love .. you know what i'm about to say.. unreliability in a narrative. i'm not a huge fan of horror movies, so my level of enjoyment is affected by my taste, but i can appreciate the slow terror in this movie, that really ends up as a tragedy. nothing is more terrifying then not being believed for what you see is the truth, and nothing is more frightening than seeing what you love most (along with reality) slip from your fingers. this movie did a great job of portraying a mother's pain.
    • suffragette ⋅ ★★★★½ ⋅ this movie is just fantastic. mulligan and bonham carter's performances were brilliant, and the direction was outstanding. their problems become personal, and it feels like i am in maud's shoes through all the hardships and triumphs she experiences. feeling her anger, (spoiler) feeling her tears when she loses her child, feeling the grief of her friend losing her life. this movie is beautifully made, and is amazing both visually and thematically. so emotionally touching and impactful.
    • my teacher, my obsession ⋅ ½☆☆☆☆ ⋅ this is so bad.. cheesy acting, awful script, bad direction. it was like every conversation in this film was about nothing and the fear factor was laughable. i honestly can't tell if it's meant to be a joke.

⠀ ⠀ ┊ july:

    • a silent voice ⋅ ★★★★☆ ⋅ though the bits of romance to me felt like they came out of nowhere, it's a beautiful movie that was thoughtfully crafted and splendidly animated, really makes you feel something.
    • the twilight saga: new moon ⋅ ★★★☆☆ ⋅ so bad it's good and keeps you watching, iconic
    • the twilight saga: eclipse ⋅ ★★★☆☆ ⋅ a bit of an improvement on the second movie, the serious parts actually felt serious and the writing was funny when it wanted to be.

⠀ ⠀ ┊ august:

    • the twilight saga: breaking dawn part 1 ⋅ ★★½☆☆ ⋅ the color palette of the movies gets better with every one, that's all i have to say.
    • the twilight saga: breaking dawn part 2 ⋅ ★★★½☆ ⋅ spoilers! but that twist made this movie.

⠀ ⠀ ┊ september:

    • ingrid goes west ⋅ ★★☆☆☆ ⋅ interesting, uncomfortable, a little flat but still insightful.

⠀ ⠀ ┊ october:

    • britney vs spears ⋅ really interesting to watch, though I got the same information from youtube videos i watched previously so there wasn't much new information for me. would recc if you don't know the situation surrounding britney's conservatorship.

⠀ ⠀ ┊ november:

    • marie antoinette ⋅ ★★★☆☆ ⋅ some parts were slightly dry and the audio design was strange at times, but otherwise this film has beautiful cinematography, amazing costuming, and a brilliant set that result in some beautiful sequences. i think it works well for what it is meant to be, an artistic piece rather than an all-encompassing biopic.
    • desecho ⋅ gripping short film, emotional, and i love the handheld shaky cam—makes the watching experience feel uncomfortable and upsetting and helps you see what the characters are going through.
    • the fisherman ⋅ when that fish started talking i thought i was the one hallucinating. interesting and i have to say i love the color palette and how it changes from beginning to end.

⠀ ⠀ ┊ december:

    • gnomeo and juliet ★★★★☆
    • encanto ★★★½☆
